Stuck on algebra question

Hi. My son has given up trying to solve this question on a practice test and I'm trying to do it but stuck. Can anyone help.

solve:
y+1/3 - y-4/4 = 2

it's obviously y+1 divided by 3 but not sure how to do this on the ipad!

thanks

Do you mean the y+1 should be in brackets? Should the y-4 also be in brackets?

Cross multiplication of the 3 and the 4, over 12. Then x the 2 by 12 to remove the denominator

Hi. It's y+1 and a line under both with 3 on the bottom if that makes sense!

Which year is your son in? See attached image for the first step, can your son use this information that the common denominator will be 3x4=12 to put both fractions over 12?

If not, ask again

Thanks. He's in 4th year (Scottish system) so sitting exams next year. I showed him the replies an I think he gets it but not convinced. If anyone can break it down completely that would be great. It's a long time since I did maths!

We're not allowed to send full solutions, however I will include the next step for you.

See if that helps
