Kenilworth Castle

Not sure if this will help but with reference to it being a typical castle, there is evidence of fortification which shows early strategies of defence dating back to typical medieval castles. Plus in the early 13th century a man-made dam was added to hold back a great lake.

Subsequently, the castle first developed as a palace with John of Gaunt, son of Edward III, constructing the great hall and associated apartments. Around 1565 the castle was further developed when Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley transformed the grounds into a new garden. The castle's fortifications were dismantled in 1650 after the Civil War and In 1958 Lord Kenilworth gave the castle to the town and it has since been managed by English Heritage.
