Materials Science 2015 Applicants

Hey guys!

I haven't seen many people applying for this course here on TSR. I decided to create a thread to see who else is applying!

Please write:
-Your university list
-GCSEs/IGCSEs
-A levels/IB/whatever exam you're currently doing

I will begin:
-Imperial (Not going to happen lol), Sheffield, Exeter, Birmingham, Manchester/Loughborough
-3A*s 4As 2Bs (in English Language and Literature)
-IB predicted pending (I think it will be 39) + A level maths

Also, if anyone is considering the course, feel free to ask questions!

Not a materials applicant myself (already a graduate of mechanical), but from what I have seen there is quite a shortage of materials engineers in industry, so it's a good course to get into. I found the materials modules I did at university very interesting, although unfortunately I don't have a strong enough (read: any) chemistry background to properly understand much of the content.

For my own interest, I have a few quick questions. Some courses are designated materials science, and others materials engineering. Is there a fundamental difference between the two courses, or is it just a different name? And also, do materials courses at universities also cover things like welding and NDE/NDT? Materials engineers in my industry usually also deal with the later aspects as well as the actual materials selection, just wondering if they're covered at university.

Woo materials!!!
I'm applying Oxford, Imperial, St.Andrews, Manchester and Durham (got Manch and Imperial offers)
9A*s 2As 1B
A levels 3A*s and an A in Phys, maths, biol and chem respectively (i've already done A2s, on my gap year)
Struggling between Oxford and Imperial, that is if i get an Oxford offer at all! Anyone got any advice as to which is better for physical sciences, or materials specifically? I know Oxford has a bigger name, but Imperial seems to have a bigger (better?) materials department.
Plz more materialist materialise

Great! What are you applying for at Durham and St. Andrews? Honestly, you can't go wrong between Oxford and Imperial. The reason why I did apply to Oxbridge (I was considering Cambridge, the better one :P) was time constraints... They are both world class universities. Personally I would pick Imperial, since I have many friends potentially heading to, or already in, London.

Congrats on your offer from Imperial! Imperial (together with Sheffield) is my first choice!

Sorry for the late reply!

I'm so glad you are interested! Actually, a background suitable for MechEng is perfectly fine!

Those 2 terms mean exactly the same thing. 2 of my schools are Materials Engineering, 1 Materials Science and 2 Materials Science and Engineering.

I am pretty sure that welding is covered, and NDT should be too.

I am not really sure about your last question, sorry :frown:

Thank you for posting this thread. I am a Materials Science graduate from a local university in Malaysia.

I just got offers from University of Leeds, University of Manchester and Newcastle University to further my masters in Materials Science and Engineering.

I am in dilemma in choosing one of three universities above. Help me anyone? I need some advise. Thank you.

p/s : I am a newbie in TSR.
Has anybody here heard about an Oxford interview from Trinity College?

I have also received an offer from Imperial for Msci. I visited the Imperial labs in summer and they are amazing. Oxford the conditional offer is much higher than Imperial so you should keep both options and see how much you get in the final exam.

Another fellow MatSci applicant. I went with Oxford, Imperial, Birmingham and Manchester. Offers from the last 3, interview at the Ox on Tuesday (terrified is not the word). I got 5A*'s 7A's at GCSE, along with 5 A's last year in Maths, chemistry, physics, economics and the Welsh Bacc. I've dropped econ this year. Also, my college is Mansfield. Great to see a MatSci thread btw!

There's a big chance that I may have met you, although I don't think we've spoken? I was interviewed at imperial on the 6th of November if that helps..
Hey guys I have firmed Imperial College for Materials next year. Anyone else planning to firm IC?

Ideally MEng Materials Science and Engineering but maybe I will chose the BEng, since is not as competitive...

Yeah, I still did not send my UCAS
