I can't cancel down this fraction?

firstly are you sure what you have written down is correct.
secondly I suspect in these type of questions some of the simplifications will occur by referring back to the equation of the conic, so post the actual question please

I've actually just finished it, although it took about a full page of miserable and tedious manipulation :/
