Friend keeps being mean to me

Yes I knew a guy who I could sometimes have good intellectual conversations with but was also a douchebag. Turned out at the end of the day that he wasn't a nice person with a mean side, but actually a mean person with somewhat of a nice side. Found this out after our education time together came to an end and he told me what he really thought of me all that time.

If he's putting you down to make himself feel better (which it sounds like he is doing), then he doesn't respect you and isn't really being a good friend. I'm not saying that friends always have to be perfect, but this is going too far.

I recommend having a chat with him and asking him why he does that. If he is willing to stop those kind of comments, fair enough. If he wants to talk about his problems, that's good as well. If he doesn't take on board what you say, though, then I think you're better off without him. Nobody needs that negativity in their lives.
