Why do we need to soften water when calculating the hardness of water?

Hardness of water varies with different concentrations of dissolved minerals and limestone. You may need to soften the water to see how much of the pure water is in a sample. You can see this effect when you boil water and have line scale left behind at the bottom of a kettle.
