According to this:

the ketone carbon chain will be broken because KMnO4 in alkaline soln is such a strong oxidising agent, and you will get a smaller chain carboxylic acid, water and C02.

although I thought KMn04 in alkaline gets reduced to the +6 form K2Mn04, in which case it would seem a less strong oxidising agent.
