What car do you have and how much is it to tax?

I see. That's very impressive. I gather you must've worked really hard to be able to buy that?

I wouldn't be so impressed. Most people earning an average wage (especially if they're a couple) can afford an expensive looking car - it's even easier if you have the bank of Mum and Dad of course but if not car finance is pretty accessible for most. You can get them on finance for a reasonable amount (I say 'reasonable' - reasonable for someone on an 'average' salary with no dependents). There are quite a few finance companies that offer status cars very cheap - they will even do deals with people on JSA, so long as the applicant can prove that they have money coming in. So I wouldn't be too impressed. Most people in brand new cars don't actually own them - they're just living beyond their means and sacrificing other luxuries/necessities to keep up with the monthly payments.

Lol anybody can do a vehicle enquiry.

Especially someone who was searching for £400 Renault Clios six months ago! Not much digging needed to debunk this guy's claim really.

As for me, I own a 2002 Toyota Corolla diesel, which costs £180 to tax. A bit cheaper than my old Golf which was over £220 per year!

Yeah of course -- it's easily affordable car if you're earning a decent wage (as a couple), but it's just that he himself is 20 and has a near 40k car. Compare that to the average guy his age rolling in their 02' reg corsa's and corolla's for example.

anyway not making judgement, just an observation ;p

Haha, I see. Well I'm not bothered about making a judgement - my best guess is he's either telling porkies or has rich parents...or won on a scratch card .

I get this kind of thing a lot, and if you must know then the car was a gift for when I passed my test in 2012 (I believe it cost around £80k or something similar). On reflection, it probably would've been better if it was something less cumbersome (and more reliable!). For this reason, I'm currently in the market for a new car but I can't make my mind up :/

Like £280 a year to tax... >:frown:

BMW e46 320d

£180 a year

Probably get rid of it next summer anyway. Might not do the remap I was considering. Planning to replace it with an F30/facelift E90 model.

Surely takes a good few years before you actually make a saving as opposed to you buying a cheaper model?

My first car was a Daewoo Matiz and now I've got a Toyota Yaris. I pay less tax for the Yaris

Noted, buddy.

You'll be pleased to hear that I recently had the engine refurbished and rebuilt. Stuff went wrong but I got it seen to by specialists and it's all good.

Service history until 2014 as well

2003 150bhp ~100k miles Silver SE edition. Should mention that the only negative thing that stands out, about the exterior, is that the front splitter is partially broken. But it's very minor tbh.

Splitters are an ebay job. It will take as long as half an hour, a can of beer and a load of spontaneous swearing to get that replaced. I'm not so keen on silver, but message me when you want to sell and I'll seriously consider it.
