Because they're children away from home for the first time surrounded by lots of other equally foolish young people.

Most people I know at uni did it way before.

Besides weed is fine. Much less foolish than taking a sip of beer.

Maybe you're the fool for accepting the status quo and not thinking for yourself?

And pirates, and people who speed, and those who are drunk in charge of cows.

Law-breaking does not define intelligence, I'm sure you are more of a fool than plenty of murderers and thieves.

Cool superiority complex bro.

Obama once smoked pot, now he's the president. Michael Phelps smokes pot, yet he the greatest Olympian to ever exist.

Who are you compared to them with your clean criminal record? Action of crime doesn't dictate who someone is.

Someone like you is probably more afraid to break the law rather than not doing it for his principles.

The same reason that excessive alcohol consumption is high among students really. A number of reasons such as...

1. First time away from home - a feeling of freedom coupled with naivety and lack of life experience = more likely to take risks.

2. Surrounded by other young people - looking to have lots of fun together and able do things that people who live with their husband/wife and kids would perhaps not be able to do.

3. Lots of spare time - taking recreational drugs (alcohol and weed) can be a fun way to pass time with other young people.

I'd also like to add there are many cannabis smokers who smoke cannabis because they like the drug itself, ignorant of all the external encouragement. I'd say it's around 30/70, with 70% being the section this thread has aptly described.

cannabis among uni students is no different from alcohol among uni students. they're in that stage of life where they want to have fun and weed is a good factor in doing so. i find it funny people who are calling it stupid never tried weed, probably took the crap in their year 8 cgp books too seriously, like naive losers.
