the acceleration becomes zero because..................

once the parachute open air resistance increases dramatically , eventually it becomes equal to the weight of the object(ie the parachutist)

and we know by newtons 1st law:

if the forces acting on a body are balanced the acceleration is zero( ie no change in velocity)
