Summer Placement and Year in Industry

I've been offered a 6 month placement which I can start once I've finished my exams in June up until October when I have to go back to Uni for my third year. However I originally wanted a 12 month year in industry, and so do you think it is possible to get a placement that doesn't start until october instead of the usual August start date?

I have an interview with a company in January, but I have to let the other company know before then?
