Can somebody actually explain what a carbon environment is?

Not sure on the exact definition, but the combination of atoms surrounding a carbon atom.(the atoms it is bonded to)

It's the environment around it... that being any other atom in the molecule. The atoms, and how thy are bonded, affect the electrons around the proton in question. This affects the NMR signal it generates (splitting and shift)
