The Student Room Group

How much culture can you fit in one year? A TSR Experiment Returns.

Following the thread made by Phalanges back in 2012 I think it could be interesting to do his experiment again for 2015.

Original Thread

I would like to read more books and watch more films during 2015. Remembering this old thread I thought I would try it again. I will also try and keep track of other things like TV and music. My aim in particular is to read 52+ books although with some of them being pretty large and heavy going it will be interesting to see if I can do that. Similarly I want to try and watch at least 52+ films. Ideally in all cases these would be films/books etc that I have not engaged with before.

The recommended sites remain:

Books: http://www.goodreads.com/
Music: http://www.last.fm/
Movies: http://www.icheckmovies.com/
TV Shows: http://followmy.tv/

Videogames: http://darkadia.com/ (I will not personally be tracking my videogames as I tend to play very few overall)

To make things more interesting you can add anything you want that you feel is relevant. This could be things like trying new recipes, going out to new and exciting restaurants, travelling to new places, learning a new language, attending concerts/theatre productions. Anything you want! :h:

Apart from for the TV shows (which was getting tedious to manually delete all my 2012 TV shows), I have cleared my previous data from these sites so that they will just show my details for this year. I am currently seeking out a new site to track my TV shows. Making a new account for followmy is just not going through.

People do not have to join these sites to take part. You can equally just post regularly on this thread with updates on what you have done in the last week/month/*insert time period here*.

So would anyone like to join my quest this year?

This is a brilliant idea :beard: But I feel confused/intimidated by all those different sites! Maybe everyone could have a post where they track their goals to make it simpler...?

People can do it however they want to really. I find it easier to track on those websites as I've used them before.

People could just say what they've watched/read/played etc in the last week/month. I'll try and do regular updates on where I am on here as well as keeping track on those websites.

If you do use followmy.tv for tracking TV it can tell you just how much TV you have actually watched.

Sounds like a good idea. I might give it a bash.

Okay, I am in then! I will set myself up a blog/thread and link through to there if that's okay. :h: I'll do books, movies, video games and food/recipes (am I allowed to add another category?!)

Nope - this sounds awesome!

Will be aiming for a book a week on average!

SirMasterKey's First Update of the Year

Books

I am currently re-reading the Song of Ice and Fire series as my first books for this new year. I am currently 72% of the way through A Game of Thrones and will hopefully get it finished tomorrow when I have another day off.

TV

I have watched several different programmes on TV, as might be expected really. I won't include those that have been on in the background whilst I was doing something else and my family was watching them. However I have been watching the following:

CSI
Legends
BDO and PDC Darts Championships
Several football games
Family Guy
American Dad
Caught Red Handed
Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers
Wallace and Gromit: A Close Shave

Games
Whilst I said that I wouldn't really include games I felt that I could state that I have played one new flash game.

City Siege 3

Film

My big aim for the year is to watch at least 52 movies I have never seen before. So whilst I have currently watched 6 films already:

Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
Megamind (2010)
Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Bambi (1942)
Monsters vs Aliens (2009)

The only new film I have seen is Exodus: Gods and Kings which I found fairly enjoyable really.

Music
I have listened to 67 tracks since I reset my last.fm account on the 3rd Jan. This has been over 5 artists:

John Powell (23)
Ludovico Einaudi (21)
Billy Joel (12)
Blondie (10)
Jonsi (1)

Me and a friend both said we would finish it before each other back when we were doing A-levels. He at least started it whereas I haven't yet. However he didn't finish it. I can still win 5 years later

Me too, I just never seem to get round to it :s-smilie: If there are a few people wanting to read it, we could all read it at the same time. :h:
