What claim did James VI have to the English throne?

I know he had a "double claim" but what does that mean?
"Baggsy!!!" - James VI.

In terms of legality, it was illegal for James to inherit the throne - as Henry VIII has legislated against foreigners holding the crown. Despite this, James' claim came because he was the son of Mary Queen of Scots whom decended from Henry VII through Henry's daughter Margret Tudor who married James IV of Scotland giving birth to James V. He was this Elizabeth's closest relative.

I'm not sure about a double claim before, where did you read this? In practice when he became King of both Scotland and England the only this that united the 2 countries was him.
