School is choosing what AS I'm allowed to drop

So in an nutshell, I had mocks about 2 weeks back. I got my results last week, CEUU. Yes it's bad, but I didn't revise for any of them and I didnt care. I was planning to actually study around now.

But now the school has presented me with a problem, I've been determined to drop English and focus on Economics, History and R.S instead. But because of the mocks and the fact I got a C in English, the school is telling me they won't allow me to drop English and I should drop something else.

However I've always been very interested in the 3 other subjects, and I detest English in every way.

They said, if I get C's in the mock resits (that are taking place now, bare in mind I've only got the results a few days ago, I have to turn a U into a C), then I could probably drop English.

My concern is that I'm pretty sure this decision of dropping an AS is up to me, and that they can advise me about what to do but not literally force me to do something I'm uncomfortable with. Ive always been a ****ty student in my English classes and consistently never worked properly and get lacking grades, I dread every single lesson and I've decided to focus on subjects on which I have genuine interest.

So yeah, are the school allowed to say 'no' to my decisions?

Also, if I want to do Law for a degree, do I really need English? (which they've been telling me.)

cheers

I think you should wait until August to decide which subject to drop.

Yes, your school can make those decisions. In my College, you have to get at least an E (pass) at AS to carry it on at A2. So even if I love French but happen to have a bad day on exam day and end up with an F, I wouldn't be able to carry on.

This is similar to that. But if you've got any balls about you then you will tell your teachers that you didn't revise and that English is the one subject you don't want to carry on with.

No English isn't essential for Law.
It is your choice what subject you drop not theirs. I advice you start focusing on your studies from now on if you want to avoid any 'dictation' from them or what you can do is continue to another college which does the same exam boards.

Actually schools can make these decisions. They decide whether you continue to study there dependent on your results.
The choice must be yours and it would be sensible to wait until August. They can only advise ...

Some schools say you cannot continue to A2 unless you get grade D at AS.

that's not the same, my school want's all to be above a C to continue on to A2, a lot of colleges do this. however in this situation it's about me dropping a subjecy i personally feel would be better for me. Im sure the schools can't be making that choice for me, but i want to make sure.

and of course im ready to fight and annoy them until they let me drop what i want to drop, but my argument wouldnt be very strong IF the school actually holds every right to choose what subject I dont want to do (which again, i doubt).

cheers for the input

Well of course I understand your school's thoughts on wanting you to go to A2 if you have at least a C at A2. But definitely fight for it.

That was just an example. You applied to the sixth form in agreement to follow their rules. If one of these are that you can't carry on with a subject you're showing no progress in then yes they can make such decisions.

Remember, they can kick you out when they want (within reason), so they are surely allowed to tell you whether or not you can continue to study a certain subject.

Good luck

the school can not let you take other subjects if you do not meet their entry requirements, but they have no say on what you decide to drop
