Boko Haram kidnaps bus passengers. Is it time to increase UN intervention?

Should the UN send in the military?

Boko haram has kidnapped bus passengers. the trouble in Nigeria and neighbouring countries shows little sign of subsiding, should the UN send a large peacekeeping force with modern equipment to help fight Boko Haram?

Well the UN doesn't do fighting, peacekeepers are meant simply to keep the peace until another force arrives. So for fights, these forces are pointless. In the end in conflicts such as these the peacekeepers will become easy targets for Boko Haram.

The first and primary part of any counterinsurgency strategy is to contain the geographical area which the insurgency operates in. Boko Haram doing raids into neighbouring nations is nothing new, but the scale has increase. The neighbouring nations need support from other African countries, so the African Union, would be the best way of doing this. Not really the UN, or any western forces. From their the Nigerian forces are able enough to deal with Boko Haram. We just don't want it become a threat to other countries, or becoming some kind of civil war. The two go hand in hand I believe.

FEDERATIVE REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL: In the Brazilian Constitutionwe have: Paragraph Brazil guidelines in foreign relation : IV-Non-Intervention. VI - Defense for Peace.
This is one of the reasons that Brazil would nevergo in war unless directly provoked.

[OOC] Personally I believe in limited intervention.
France believes that the UN should play a bigger role in the Boko Haram situation.

I do not think the African Union is capable of dealing with Boko Haram. Boko Haram is using guerrilla tactics, few AU troops have been trained in, to cause trouble. There is also a question about the resources the AU have available to use in the battle. While there are plenty of poorly-trained, low-paid, unmotivated, ill-equipped soldiers available to fight Boko Hara, they are incapable of doing so. New Zealand argues the only way to defeat Boko Haram is to actively support the AU in their goal.
With Nigeria launching airstrikes against targets but killing multiple civilians in doing so, the Nigerian military looks increasingly incapable of defeating Boko Haram.

The article reveals only 1400 have been killed in 5 years and residents are being held in their homes by the surround fights taking place. Nigeria's biggest concern should be to evacuate its people from the hot spots. New Zealand will continue to monitor the situation and be ready to evacuate its nationals if required to do so.

Australia believes the corrupt Nigerian government needs to put their hand in their pocket and invest heavily in training and arms in order to give their troops a chance in fighting this guerrilla opposition. It is unfair to call their current soldiers lazy or inadequate, quite frankly they have been sold short by their own greedy leaders. They must act now and stop these power hungry mobsters from killing anymore innocent civilians including children
