Goldney people do tend to harp on about their bloody hall a lot. This rubbery faced bird in one of my seminars is always going on about some trite detail that makes Goldney better than everywhere else in Clifton.

The people make the place, not the bloody wardrobes. Or the fact that you're near the Hunger Hatch (which is **** btw).

People 'big up' Clifton because it's a beautiful area that is close(r) to the University and everything you'll most likely need isn't that far out of reach. Seeing as you don't live in Clifton you can't accurately comment about it, just like I don't comment on SB as it's something I know nothing about. All I know is that sometimes the walk to Clifton is 'bad' enough, the idea of having a further 30 minutes on top of that just doesn't appeal to me at all.
i have BEEN to clifton and goldney hall in particular. nothing special. i dont see why there's such a fuss about us having a 30min walk? over 1000 people+ do it everyday, really not that bad. i'm always hearing people in clinton saying that their walk is soooo much better than ours and i even spoke to one girl who said 'my hall is much cleaner than any other i've seen'.

would you not rather be with a whole lot of students, rather than stuck in clifton? you can't bar crawl around 5 other cheap hall bars any night, there's no real banter.... eh, i just much prefer SB.

Don't you ever wonder why people go on about Goldney a lot? They do it for a reason. We have a themed night every Friday (tonight is Stock Exchange Drinks night- i'm so sad i'm missing it!), and the people DO make the place- but it doesn't hurt to have a beautiful 17th century garden and great facilities on top of that...

And how DARE you insult Hunger Hatch!!!!

People who keep going on about why Clifton isn't so great either a) have no idea about it or b) are jealous that i can get up 20 minutes before a lecture and still be there on time. I frankly don't give a **** about 'sobering up' when the walk that does it is across Europe's rape hotspot.

Yeah but it wouldn't matter for you Rosie - they don't go for girls, apparently...

Right, I'm in Stoke Bishop, and I have to say, I'd much rather be in Clifton. It's closer to the Uni. It's a nicer area. There's stuff going on right on your doorstep. Stoke Bishop's a decent area, but it's a bit crap for a student, really. Sure, we have the hall bars and a shop, but if you want to go to a proper pub/bar/shop/cash machine, you have to walk 10 minutes across the downs. That's rubbish. Sure, there's lots of us in SB, but I really can't imagine the atmosphere is any different in Clifton than it is in SB...sure there's not as many of them, but there's still a good few hundred.

I have to see I don't see the fuss about Goldney as a hall - don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's nice, but there doesn't appear to be that much that makes it nicer than the others....with the exception of the location.

That's the big thing, location, location, location. Will we want to live in Stoke Bishop next year, when we get our own places? Will we ****. We'll live in Cotham, or Redland, or quite possibly Clifton.

One mini-rant that is vaguely related...there's nothing more annoying than people from Wills/Churchill (or anyone who listed a SB hall as their first choice) complaining about the walk into town. Look, you idiotic peasants, you WANTED to go there. When applying to Wills, or Churchill, you KNEW you had a bloody 30-minute walk into town. So don't ****ing whine about it. I wanted to be in Clifton, I didn't get in there, and since there's no catered halls outside SB, I'm bloody stuck here. I can have a whine if I want.

Stoke Bishop's alright, but if anyone's in Clifton Hill House and finds out one of their neighbours has dropped out, give me a call...

PS On the upside, James is entirely correct - Miss Millie's is SO much better than the Hunger Hatch - that's really not even a worthwhile debate.

    1. There's 3 halls there, and there's the town right on the doorstep.

    2.
    "Haha, you're in Wills. Rah."
"Yeah, you're in ****e Bunker. Pikey."
    "Whatever, go wear your pashmina."
"Shut up, go back to your council estate."

I bet the Cliftonites are really missing the banter...

says you michael who can't even spell 'bet'. although i did like the use of the red and blue.

i think its def. true that the SB bars are better, from what i've heard anyway. sorry, i havent been raped walking back across the downs. as long as you dont go running across by the water tower naked, you're gonna be fine. and theme nights? stock exchange drinks? i'd much rather go to a wills formal thank you. dont get me started on the gardens....its just a bunch of flowers n stuff, not something i'm THAT interested in, i'll be honest.

when i went to goldney it was alright....i wasn't like...holy ****, i wish i was here. gardens just dont do it for me...

so from your non experience you can say you prefer SB? fair play.

The points that you've made are of no interest to me, I have no desire to bar crawl round hall bars, though it is annoying that me and Rosie are the only people who live in Clifton.

I like the way you talk about being 'stuck' in Clifton, which is a lot closer to most of the amenities that I use when compared to SB.

So let me get this straight...you'd rather get dressed up in the same formal stuff every week, rather than go to a different themed party with cheap drinks every Friday. Pirate night, mexican night, emergency services night, chav pub golf...i could go on.

You say it's definitely true that SB hall bars are better- but you haven't been to any Clifton ones? Loving your logic there...

I'm sorry you don't appreciate being in a nice environment- i suppose that's your loss.

Of COURSE when you went round Goldney you weren't astounded by it- you don't LIVE here, how could you ever get a decent idea of what it's like?

yep, thats right. i dont really fancy dressing up in 'wacky' costumes and you don't have to wear te same formal stuff every week. also, i have been to goldney since i've been here, i know some people up there, not just on the open day. it was all a bit.....meh...nice gardens. whats wrong the SB environment anyway? the downs are really quite a picture on a cold, crisp morning and i'm sure in summer, they'r gonna be even better.

oh and i've heard (try reading) that the SB bars are better. i use the word 'stuck' because well its quite a small student population down there, you are kind of isolated. i really cant believe that you wouldnt want to crawl around hall bars, its a great way of meeting new people.

and mexican night? smacks of being a typical, 'oooh yes, lets go and dress up in sombreros and be rowdy because we're in fancy dress', student attitude. i just think the fact that i've met....3 goldney people and no other cliftonites shows the isolation...

Yes, the theme nights do sound a bit crap. Fair enough if it's cheap drinks, but HB is £1 a pint anyway.

Im loving the random arguments about which halls are best:cool:

What i'd say to anybody applying to any university would be to apply to a catered hall as they have bigger floors thus more chance to make friends. I have a friend in a certain self catered hall and she hates it as she is stuck in a flat with 5 people she doesn't get on with. Bigger floors equals more sociable.

In terms of the arguments. I don't mind the walk over the downs; but im a country boy so im used to walking Clifton obviously is a better area though and the cheese and chips at the uhner hatch is immense.

when we did pub golf we went to the clifton bars and to SB afterwards. i have to say the SB bars do seem to be a lot nicer and have cheaper drinks but then again it's so much more effort for them to go somewhere else in town for a night out. no matter what anyone says you really can't get away from the fact that it's a walk. i don't believe for one minute that anybody that lives there enjoys doing the walk every single day and never wishes they were in clifton.

as for atmosphere i think people will love wherever they are, you learn to. i thought manor bar wasn't the greatest the first time i saw it, especially compared to baddock bar which is awesome really, but now i absolutely love it. also, it's self catered but in corridors so you have the social aspect despite the odd bit of cutlery going missing...

rooms make a lot of difference, even if you don't spend much time in them in the first few weeks you'll soon have to for work or whatever as you get more and more to do so pick something homely. ours are so big and have character. even DB liked it and he's in goldney where everyone supposedly wants to go!

Yeah dressing up incessantly is rather freshers week for my taste.

I'd rather have a few beers and a dance without feeling compelled to be 'wacky'.

The hall bar experience is great, one of the best nights I've had here was a crawl of all the HB bars. Met loads of randoms, had a few drinks, got thrown out of Badock (or so I've been told, I can't remember anything from Wills bar onwards). That was a very good night.

I had quite possibly the worst kebab of my life at the Hunger Hatch. It is crap. It just opens relatively late and is near all you Cliftonites.

This is really a pointless debate, all I'm saying is that I love it at Hiatt Baker, the stuff I had heard about it having a broad mix of people was true. On my floor we have international students, kids who went to boarding school, people like me from comprehensives, private schools, faith schools whatever -people of varying social backgrounds. That exactly what I wanted, and from what I've seen the other halls aren't as diverse (of course no one hall is full of any one type, although Churchill is pretty posh by most accounts). Also the union shop is like 20 seconds from my room so I can gorge on Ginsters in my council estate style abode until I go blue in the face.

    Which I do.

And £1 pints. That just kinda wins any argument, even if it isn't about cheap lager being great.

Is it "cheese and chips"? I thought it was "cheesy chips". Lol...

PS I must say, after my earlier rant about Stoke Bishop, that I am feeling particularly pissed off with being so far away from the Uni today. I have to go in to hand my essay in. That's it. That's all I've got all day. So it's 30 mins there, 1 min of giving my essay to someone, and 30 mins back. And it's pissing down with rain. I've been waiting for it to stop raining for the last three hours. It won't stop. **** it, I'm going now.

Well it's just a plate of chips with grated chedder on it.

Not like cheese somehow inside the chips.

    Which would be equally foul.

if you had the time you could slice open each individual chip, pipe in melted cheese, then re-heat the chip. voila. when you bite into it, its like a cheesy-potato-y party in your mouth...
