The accommodation can be ugly from the outside, but when decorated it's wonderful. Also, the accommodation is purpose built for students to live in so much more convenient as accommodation than some other Cambridge buildings.

Seems to be a lot of uncertainty about New Hall here. You really shouldn't worry guys. I must admit that before I knew anyone there and visited it, I didn't think much of it. However, as far as I can tell the single sex aspect doesn't really make that much of a difference if you're outgoing enough to actually make friends in other colleges. As for the architecture it's pretty cool for a new college. Especially the original bits with the dome, the bar/JCR, the water-channels and the different levels. Bit like an art gallery. I certainly prefer it to Fitzwilliam.

You'll love it guys.

Hey!

I'm a former New Hallite and just thought I'd introduce myself in case anyone had any questions. It's a lovely College for those of you who are apprehensive- and just next door to Fitz- nice guys there, lol!

I was in Old Block for my first year too (H10 for those who know it) and it's really small and not enough space for my clothes, lol, but it has a balcony! (Actually, shared with my DOS!!!). But it does get better from 2nd year.

Anyway, congrats to you guys who got an offer- it's a lovely place and you'll love it!

New Hall have just picked me out of the pool for an interview next week, I'm feeling scared and excited!!
i have also been picked for interview from the pool! excited but worried about more interviews! anyone know how the med interviews are?

also they've said its for deferred 2008 entry? :s-smilie:

but any info on New Hall would be great... do lots of people end up there from pools/open apps?

is the fact its quite a distance from the centre compared to other colleges a good or bad thing?

girls only? HONEST opinions please?

that said, i will prob be rejected, based on statistics, so! but any help appreciated

I've been pooled to New Hall too! For History. Really not looking forward to another interview!!!

Anyone else slightly worried about it bing all-girls? That was the only thing that I didn't think I wanted. But then again, having looked at the website, maybe there are a few advantages?

ive also got a pool interview there for nat sci, on friday.

to Subbacultcha, if you werent applying for deffered entry, i suggest calling them and check if its a mistake.

http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/statistics/ has all the admissions info for colleges/subjects. New Hall seem to take a quite a few from the pool.

hello poolees!!
don't worry too much about the all girls thing
lots of people (in fact the majority i think) at new hall are fished from the pool and everyone ends up liking it
i'll be back at nh for the interviews on all three days so if any of you want to meet up and discuss anything feel free to contact me
good luck to you all!!
I got pooled to New Hall too.....wasn't too amused to be honest as I went to an all girls school for years 7-11 and hated it. I always swore i'd never go if i got into an all girls college, but now i'm just confused. I want to go to cambridge but worry i won't fit in anyway so this would be doubly problematic as all my friends are male. Any advice for a very confused one?
I have also got 3 interviews.....one after the other....:{
I don't know....I'm hoping i warm to it when i go for the interviews.
Also, i was wondering because my rejection/pooling letter said i could be interviewed by more than one college, can more than one college actually take you from the pool?

Poolites: have a look at the wiki page I made about New Hall (I graduated in July)
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/New_Hall%2C_Cambridge
On graduation day we were all crying because we were all so proud of the place - the college does have a really good atomsphere.

I was pooled to NH for English last year.

I went to an all girls school from 7-18(!), & although I was incredibly happy to be rescued from the pool, I was quietly gutted that I'd been picked by NH; it would have been the very last college I'd have chosen to apply to (Newnham's old & prettier...).

I spent the first month moaning about the all-girls thing, but really it just gives you greater reason to go out and socialise with other colleges - far better than just sticking with a small college friendship group. I'm only really in college for occasional meals, sleeping & essay writing; our year's been great at organising formal swaps with other colleges, & I've got friends at other colleges anyway.

I agree with blissy too: college atmosphere is great, probably because a lot of people start out feeling like I did & then end up feeling really proud & defensive of NH. Plus, you get to walk on the grass... & the grass actually has trees on it...

(& for English candidates: the English tutors at NH are absolutely brilliant, couldn't ask for better)

Third year English student at New Hall here! I agree very much with Amaryllis' comment that the all-girls status of the college means you have more of a reason to get out and make friends at other colleges. Speaking as someone who's got a history in Cambridge, I can say that the time may come when you'll be glad you don't go to an insular mixed college and have a more diverse social life, not least because the gossip mill doesn't function quite so effectively if you're not at a small mixed college where everyone knows everyone else's business. You may eventually find that what you thought was a disadvantage when you arrived at New Hall becomes very much an advantage in later years.
The idea is starting to grow on me, well as my only option i guess it has to lol I just thought about it rationally: I will be educated in a mixed environment, just as i am now, so I'm not losing anything that i have at the moment. Of course, if i got a call from another college for more interviews i wouldn't be disappointed....but such is life, u make the best of what u have been given (oooooh i sound so mature....how uncharacteristic of me!)

Hey ladies!
Lots of inevitable concern about the all-female thing; completely sympathise. But, as everyone who has *been* to NH has been saying, it's really not a problem. Obviously I'm at Newnham, so it's a bit different, but the gender thing is the same.

When I went on an open day to Cam, I had a list of colleges to take a look at, picked from the prospectus. Went to see about 7, and was impressed (but not really inspired...just in awe). It rained, and I popped under the beautiful Pfeiffer Arch at Newnham (without knowing it was Newnham, or that Newnham was all-female). Saw the gorgeous gardens and decided there and then to appy. LATER I found out it was women, and by that time it didn't matter as my gut reaction to it was so strong.

Sooo...I went for absolutely NOT considering all-women to going for it. I went to a mixed school, and the vast majority of my friends were male. And, actually, going to Newnham has been fantastic: a group of the most incredible female friends (which I wouldn't have thought I'd ever have); AND incentive to get out of the college and see the rest of Cambridge (and its men  ); and consequently have 50:50 mix of friends. I genuinely don't notice most of the time that it's all girls. Seriously.

And you NH lot have an even *better* situation in some respects: Fitz and Churchill are just next-door!

(And no, NH isn't that far away from the centre at all. It's just that the world shrinks in Cam and people start thinking that a walk of more than 5 mins is excessive! It's only a 10min bike ride into town).

You've got every opportunity to love it - just go in intending to have the time of your life!

Just recieved a interview timetable from New Hall, with a list of fellow history poolies. There's only 10 of us for history, so hopefully the odds od getting a place are quite high

Anyone else pooled to New Hall for History?
Do all of the same subject interviews happen on the same day? I have seen the maths timetable for thursday and there are only 6, and i am the only one doing computer science as well. Is there anyone else going for a maths interview on another day other than thursday?
