Empowerment of Women using Investment

In 1976 a Bangladesh economist, Muhammad Yunus, founded the Grameen Bank. The bank is a lending programme providing female clients loans for business investment. These microcredit loans are directed towards females who as a whole have a higher record of repayment and return than males.

Loans are seen as a way of female empowerment providing access to security, resources, and higher status in the household. In one year, up to 5% of borrowers rise out of poverty.

Borrowers own over 90% of the bank which earns a profit, and is self-sufficient. The microcredit model is claimed to be a success but critics argue the real credit is mainly dominated by men and control of microcredit is still with men.

Is the microcredit model a success, and should it be expanded to empower more females in the world?
