Harold Shipman

I'm just trying to become more knowledgeable about medical issues, past and present, when I came across Harold Shipman. I just wanted to know what changes the GMC made in light of the the inquiry (I read that there might be a 5 year 'MOT' like thing - but I've been searching and don't know what changes did eventually come into place). Also, what kind of ethical debates did the post-Shipman report raise?

I'd be grateful for any help.

Interestingly (or not!) one of my D.Phil friends was from Hyde, and her mums GP was a certain Dr Shipman...

Her mum misses "that nice Dr Shipman", and hates her new (or not so new now), presumably 'non-murdering; non-****head' GP. He doesn't know her or understand her medical problems... So it just goes to show how one persons bad apple/psychopath can be anothers lifeline... (not saying that I have any sympathy with him what so ever, but I do find the perception of others fascinating)... and also highlight how difficult picking up such issues is in reality...
