Live at uni or commute????

Hi everyone,
Please could somebody give me some advice on what to do!
I live in Hereford and I'm going to Worcester Uni in September, I'm unsure on whether to live in Worcester or commute daily.

The only things holding me back from living in Worcester is the loans I'd take out for living expenses, if I'm on placement in Hereford is silly to commute from Worcester everyday and I know that any free time I have I will be back in Hereford anyway!

Has anybody been through this and can give me some pointers about either commuting or living in Worcester please, thanks :-)

Hey jezzer14.

I knew plenty of people who commuted to and from Worcester when I studied at HCA. It's only a short commute, and if you're hoping to spend all your free time in Hereford anyway then it sounds like a better option to do that.

However…

Worcester's one I'll possibly accept, and I live in Hereford currently too. I'd be looking at university accommodation if I end up there. I have virtually no independence at the moment outside my full-time job, (why I'm not majorly concerned about the expenses I guess) and I'm in very early 20s. I wouldn't just move out for the sake of it and I have no other reason to, so for me the accommodation route is an amazing opportunity.

If you've already got independence then you don't have as much to miss out on.

Finance matters too. It'll be a lot cheaper to commute. All depends on your circumstances I guess. :smile:

I think to get the full student experience you need to move to Worcester - the rents aren't that bad for houses. We're talking about £400 a month. You're looking at £150+/- to commute a month assuming you've not got a railcard and will be in 4 days a week.

I'm moving to Worcester for my PGCE in September. After having had the experience of living in with other students during my undergrad I'm thinking of living on my own for this year but will be actively trying to get out and meet people so I don't turn into a hermit! So similarly I think it shouldn't be a problem living at home as long as you make the effort the socialise :smile:

and of course if you're looking for more opportunities to get out the house dm me and we could arrange a pub trip or something to make more friends and branch out the independence :smile:

I'm thinking about commuting from Derbyshire. I would love to move to Worcester but I find the idea of halls quite stressful as I'm 27 not 18! But i can imagine commuting being very tiresome too, perhaps id miss out on fully immersing myself into the experience?

Manchester?!? Im nowhere near lol. Im in Draycott so it's about an hour and a half drive! Still a fair bit but I'm lost on where manchester comes in lol

Yeah well Manchester is west isn't it, so I just meant like west side of Derbyshire :smile:

it would take me at least 2 hours to get to worcester from where I am! Couldn't imagine doing that haha! What course you doing? X

Edit: after having looked where in Derbyshire draycott is, I can understand your confusion. I live in the Peak District so have sheffield oneside and Manchester the other :smile:

I'm evidently more North than you so sorry if I confused you :smile:

I've just finished my degree at Worcester and now doing a Postgraduate. I live not far from Draycott, literally down the road, and I personally couldn't imagine coping with the commute for 3 years! I completely see your position with regards to halls (it is an experience) but there are other options such as private renting or house sharing away from halls :smile:

I think with it being quite a long commute compared to others you might find it more difficult to immerse in the student experience, but I could be wrong! Hope that helps :smile:
