Why do guys care SO MUCH of a females appearance?

Why do guys care so much about females appearance? Does she have to be pretty in order for him to date her? What if she is pretty but such an arrogant bitch, but ugly and has a AWESOME personality (like proper wifey material), would you still date her regardless of looks?

In my experience it has more often been the ladies who are more judgemental of looks as a first impression.

Nay. Arrogance through and through.
The world is a shallow place. There is lots of water.

It works the other way around as well, there usually needs to be some kind of physical attraction.
