Yeah, the circumstances of her offer were quite odd actually. She applied for '07 entry, but a couple of weeks after her interview she got an offer over the phone for '08 entry, specifying she had to spend a year in France to improve her French! Either that, or go into the pool. So she took the offer. Who wouldn't?

Weird - but saying that, my offer letter specified that I had to improve my language skills too... & there was me thinking that was because of my duff test!

hey, im a newnham mmler, just started this year, and i just wanted to say that I really don't think its that unusual for newnham to ask linguists to take a gap year anyway - i applied for deferred entry so i guess it didn't make a difference to me, but my offer letter said exactly the same, that i had to spend a year improving my language skills, which i did, whilst having a wkd time..!but one of the other first year linguists didn't apply for deffered entry and was told she had to take a gap year...r u doing an ab initio language by any chance??

congrats on your offer by the way!!!that doesn't really offer any explanation for u, jus to let you know its not all that strange!and now you've got to take a gap year, make the most of it, i wish i could have another one...!

^ ah no, I was going to take a gap year anyway; but yes, German & ab initio Russian. Saying that, I'm spending the gap year in Germany so I'm not going to be improving my Russian all that much. Ho hum.

Hooray for everyone who got into Newnham, and I'll see you all in October! (I got an offer to read arch & anth, huzzah!)

I have a conditional offer for MML (French and ab-intio Italian) 2007, so with any luck I'll see you all at Newnham soon!

My mother was advised when she applied to Girton in 1948 to take time out to improve her spoken French, as most of her degree course was literature based - so there is nothing unusual in this request, I can assure you. I think most other universities' language courses involve a year abroad, whereas I seem to remember Cambridge's don't, do they? My ma also did Swedish ab initio, but I don't think this had anything to do with it.

Er, Cambridge's MML course certainly does involve a year abroad!
HI!! I want to apply to Newnham to study medicine in 2008! I went on their website (not a lot in their web. compared to the other colleges) and there's no info about how medicine is like there!

I wanted to know overall about what's good about Newnham (like the gym) plus are there are disadvantages of studying there? (for example do you cycle huge distances to the nearest lecture theatre..etc..).
one big massive huge gigantic disadvantage:

theres no men!

lol

for starters..

Gym is good, and we're just accross the road from the sidgwick site. I have no idea where the med faculty is so I can't tell you exactly how far you'd be from your lectures, but I've had no problem walking to pretty much anywhere in cambridge within 15-20 mins- I only need to cycle if I'm going to New Hall or the other hill colleges for a supervision. No disadvantages that I know of, but feel free to PM me with any specific concerns you may have (I'm the JCR Vice President)

Hey!

I don't know where the medicine lectures are, I'm afraid. But seriously, the distances shouldn't put you off. Yes, some colleges might involve a 20 min cycle to somewhere, but that really isn't far compared to the transport difficulties faced by people at other universities. So don't worry too much about that!

Newnhm's gym is good and onsite (lots of colleges don't have an onsite facility). Ditto the playing fields. The library is *fantastic*! We've got a brand new shiny catering area and main Hall, with a friendly coffee and social area attached (it opens this next term and looks incredible). The gardens is one of the best-kept secrets in Cambridge - it's beautiful and huge...and we can *walk on the grass*! The College is an easy walk into town, but far enough out to avoid all the annoying tourists. Importantly, you will have lots of teaching by *women* which, in a science subject particularly, is actually quite rare. (Though don't worry, you WILL have male supervisors, and you WILL be taught with men too!). Newnham doesn't feel like a college or institution, but it feels like home...you come in after a long day and it feels really comfortable and...nice!

Disadvantanges? Metaphysical mentions the lack of men. If you want men to be living next-door to you, Newnham can't provide that. BUT the University as a whole still has more than 50% males, so provided you get involved in University life in some way, you can't avoid meeting them! (My friendships are about 50:50 male:female). You will have mixed teaching groups too. In all honesty, I would say that's the only obvious "disadvantage"...and I - and loads others - actually really like that factor. It encourages a vibrant social life, whilst providing a really homely atmosphere to study in.

I suggest you contact that Newnham Admissions Office and ask for a copy of the Newnham Prospectus (the official one) and Alternative Prospectus (the one written by students). The Admissions people are extremely helpful, and they aren't involved in the process of interviews etc. so any 'daft' questions aren't going to ruin your chances or anything! These two prospectuses will give you a better idea of what the College is all about.

Ohh, one last thought - Newnham was in the top two colleges last year for its performance in Medicine. (AND all the medics I know are absolutely lovely!).

Feel completely free to PM me with any other questions.

it did look very lovely when i went there
Newnham is a quiet college, big emphasis on that! Each year has a drinking soceity so it is fine for going out and stuff once you are established in cambridge, but i must say freshers week wasn't quite the experience i was expecting - you have to work quite hard to find a good night out and newnham bar is pretty much dead in the water (though there is talk of a revival!) - if you prefer dvd nights on the other hand then this is the collges for you! I don't mean to put people off by any means but i think its important not to sugarcoat the collge too much.

Having said all that i have no porblem finding a good night out now as there are plenty of other collge bars which are cheap and lively and the clubs are pretty decent too.

Completely valid points *fairy princess*!

Would just like to say, though, that it is also perfectly normal and extremely easy to have a social life that doesn't involve "going out" in the drinking sense. Newnham's bar is dead, utterly...but that does encourage everyone to go out and actually get to know people which, honestly, is really good (and not difficult). Some other colleges have such a fantastic *college* social life that people quite literally never socialise outside it. That I find extremely worrying! But I do completely concede that the college bar is not exactly social capital of Cambridge...ahem.

I've said before and I will continue to say: The only thing that restricts your social life is you.

Haha i apologise if I have given the impression that the only way to socialise is through alcohol - this of course is not true!

I find baking a cake is an excellent way to socialise, providing you have a decent kitchen - this can be very variable in Newnham but in general the first year kitchens are pretty good.....anyway........I rarely have spare time during the day for sport etc. but that is my fault for taking a course with so many lectures
