Help with grammar

When to use 'the' and 'a'???

"The", the definite article, is used when you are referring to a specific thing, whereas "a", the indefinite article, is used when referring to an object or thing, but not a specific one.
For example: "can you pick up the cake" indicates that you are referring to a specific thing, whereas "can you pick up a cake" suggests that it can be any cake, not a specific one. :-)

'the' is known as the definite article and is only used when talking about something specific whereas 'a' is known as the indefinite article and isn't used to talk about anything specific.
Hope this helps:wink:
