Life at Roehampton University

Hi guys! My name is TaylaGrace and I'm currently a first year student studying English Literature with Creative Writing at Roehampton University. I live in halls in Froebel college. If there is anything anyone would like to ask at all about life here I would be more than happy to answer; be that about any part of the campus (Froebel, Digby, Southlands or Whitelands) and any department. If you'd like to know more about things you can get involved in just drop me a reply! Also, I thought it would be of use to write a few posts about things I either wish I knew or wish I did before I came to university, so look out for those... I look forward to hopefully hearing from you

Hey Caulfe!

I'm so glad that you will be attending Roehampton in September, you've chosen an amazing department to join! The English department here is great. Some of the lecturers you will meet are full of so much passion and energy, you'll definitely be compelled to feel inspired by them. The course content is my favourite thing about studying English. You'll be surprised at some of the things you will discover about literature and one title that I have in mind is Paradise Lost by John Milton. This was the first text we studied this year and has to be one of my personal favourites. It opened my mind to the literature that attempts to convey powerful messages and the authors that tried to influence future generations. You'll have a lot of choice when it comes to what you write your essays on too, as not everything you read has to be included. I feel that I have a great deal of independence when it comes to my learning. If I have any tips, I'd say that you should get your hands on the material from the reading list during the summer holidays; it would be most beneficial to try and get a some of the reading done to prepare yourself for starting.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask

Hey there!

I would say that from all those I have seen that Froebel halls, down in Willow, Aspen and Linden are the biggest rooms (they're all en suite). En suite rooms are definitely the largest universally. I live in Froebel and everyone down here is pretty sociable. During Fresher's week and throughout the year there are a lot of occasions where all Froebel students meet in and outside a building called Jebb. Froebel also is home to the student's union and bar, so inevitably that would make our college on the whole, more sociable. However, I do know that Digby college can be as equally sociable as there are a lot more of them down there. They have Digby diner, and the Hive etc which are places that are good to socialise during the day. Southland's I'd say is averagely sociable, they have a place down there called 'The Reef' which is a bar/ cafe where a lot of them hang out. I've been in there and it's actually really nice. I can't say a lot for Whitelands, it's apart of the campus but is located about 10 minutes walk down the road, they have a newly refurbished bar which is really lovely.

If anything, most colleges tend to stick with people from their own colleges during social events. But you'd feel welcome where ever you choose to be  If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Hey,

I'm studying at Roehampton come September, and I was just wondering about how much music there is going on at Roehampton - I am a musician, and am interested in choirs/orchestras, and I was wondering if Roehampton has any musical activities that go on? There isn't any information on the website sadly - could you tell me if there is?

Thanks.
This thread doesn't seem to be active anymore, but on the off-chance someone can help... I was also wondering about music at Roehampton, as well as how much there is going on in the local area? I can't seem to find much information about the area around the campus - it seems pretty quiet, is that true?

Can't help with the music, but yes Roehampton itself is very quiet, not much around. Main campus has a small shop and it's a short bus ride to main supermarkets. Kingston and Putney are close and have restaurants and a few clubs. The whitelands campus has a few more shops within walking distance but thats about it really.

That's very helpful, thank you!
