having done an IR degree my experience my grades didn't correlate with the amount of time I put in, more whether I knew what a top answer would be.

there's no set time, different essays take different amounts of time, I've got a 1st on an essay I spent approximately 6 hours on (it was during exam season and I figured I was never going to do well on it so why waste valuable time!) and a 2.2 on an essay I spent god knows how long on...

I did a politics degree and like Jelly I found that there was no correlation between how long I spent on an essay and the grade I got.
It's all about what you write, not how long you spend writing it.
