Journalism: Chester, or Sheffield?

Hello to all reading this,

I've only just signed up to the Student Room because, well... I really need a second opinion on something. I've applied to two universities in particular, The University of Sheffield and the University of Chester, as they both offer Journalism (being the course I want to study) courses which appealed to me.

However... I have absolutely no idea on which university I should pick for my firm choice. Both universities have their fair share of pros to me, and I'm really struggling to decide which one I like the look of the most!

For the most part, I'm interested in Press Journalism, however, I'm willing to experiment with other mediums as well. Sheffield seems to offer a more diverse course whereas Chester's is more specialised.

I could really do with some opinions on both the courses and the university experience as a whole (special regards given to accommodation, travel and the social aspects), as both universities are really at a stalemate in my mind at the moment.
Hi. Have you thought about the reputation of both universities? Both for your course and an overall view of the university. I visited Chester but I wasn't a big fan of it but that's a personal opinion. It was a bit outdated and could do with a good makeover. Sheffield is a good university given that the city can be a bit of a put off.

Yeah, the reputation of both universities is another tearing factor. Sheffield offers a more accredited course but like you said, the city isn't the most hospitable. Chester has a very secure fashion to it, but the course and the social aspects of it are a bit more restricted.

Plus, my parents are really sceptical about the idea of me going to Sheffield. They say it's due to the distance (I live in Staffordshire) and its restrictive travel system. Plus, they're concerned that the course might not cover Press Journalism (Despite constant reassurances by the University that the course is diverse and offers a wide range of Journalism).

Chester is more further away from Staffordshire then Sheffield is. I live in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and it's about 45 - 60 minutes away from Sheffield. If your really big on Press Journalism then you should go to Chester. Parents are usually right as well.

Whats ur firm and insurance choice? Maybe you can have one as your insurance and the other as your firm? That way you might not lose out on much?

That's what I'm struggling to decide! Which one should be my firm and which one should be my insurance? Sheffield wants higher grades, whilst offering a diverse, accredited course, whereas Chester wants lower grades (easier target to reach), and offers a more specialised course - despite having less accreditations in comparison to Sheffield.
Go for Sheffield as firm and Chester as insurance then.

What at you can do is that there are threads for each of the universities. You can tag yourself on those threads and ask opinions about these two cities.
