How do you prefer to use uni textbooks?

Do you prefer to just read through the relevant chapter after each lecture, make notes from the textbook? Or something else?
I read through relevant chapters for each topic, taking additional notes that may not have been covered in lectures. I know people who like to read ahead, but I prefer giving myself enough time to let information sink it before moving onto a new topic.
I don't use textbooks as we need to reference academic authors with a specific opinion, not someone summing things up

they are only helpful if you don't understand something like a theory, otherwise for an exam again we need to know what academics think not the textbook author
I try to ignore them at all costs.
