Im confused.

How does cos^2x + sin^2x = 1?

cos^2 alpha-sin^2 alpha= cos2alpha

is different from cos^2A+sin^2A=1

Both are true

I am not sure what order you are doing your study but one of the first trigonometric identities that people learn is that cos squared alpha plus sin squared alpha equals 1
cos^2x + sin^2x = 1
