Have heard that Manchester is highly regarded by employers but that may be just because it is a vast uni and therefore there is plenty of choice for employers.
Personally, I would love to see an up-to-date table of employer rankings. This one is quite old now....

well someone tell me why it would? If manchester had a chance then surely UCL would have an even greater chance? The gap between Oxbridge, Imperial and LSE compared to UCL and Warwick is pretty large.
You're not even an undergraduate and you seem to know unis so well...You're opinions are only based on league tables and you repeat what other people have said... (I'm astonished/chocked by how you throw in claims such as "manchester can never equal oxbridge" or "gap between Oxbridge, ICL, LSE and Warwick/UCL is huge" when you haven't even started uni!). The only people I trust concerning rankings and reputation are researchers and lecturers (who know the system well, have attended a HUGE number of different unis in different countries and who can thus compare them). For all the people who want to know how their unis rank/how pretigious they are: don't listen to stupid comments made by people who haven't even started uni!! The opinions of your teachers, family members who have done postgrads or are academics etc... are much more valuable. A cousin of mine who has lectured at a lot of different unis (warwick, bath, brstol, exeter) sees Exeter as an excellent uni.

ps i gave a paper at the university of geneva in the summer - are you living or studying there? the unimall (however it's spelt) was very impressive. so was playing oversized chess in the old grounds and drinking larger (as you may be able to tell, i'm one of those postgraduates you mention that lectures and has presented at different universities around the world and you are definately right - exeter is a cracking university and i chose to do my phd here over cambridge )

Yep, I live in Geneva. Its University is really good: I was tempted to stay in Geneva and go there but it's a city uni: there's a department on one side of town, and another on the other (contrasting with the campus feel that Exeter or Warwick have). How did you like the city of Geneva? Are you planning to become an academic later on or will you be searching for a "standard" job after you phD?

Quite a few friends of mine who lived in Geneva went to Exeter. One of them told me that a 1st year died of alcohol overdose this year...Any current student heard of this?!

yeah i really liked geneva. much smaller than i thought it would be, but a lovely part of the world, especially the old town. i assume zurich is larger (?) i prefare exeter cathedral to geneva cathedral though . the history of the university is amazing with rousseau, calvin, piaget etc on the list. a guy did drink himself to death unfortunately. just out of interest, why would somebody from geneva come to exeter?

Yep Zurich is significantly bigger than Geneva. Old town is pretty nice, but it does get a bit annoying when you find a street with ONLY banks!
Concerning my friends who went to Exeter, we are all special casesr: we were all in a school in France, just across the french boarder (20 mins from my house) and went through the french national curriculum. But the particularity of this high-school is that it offered an english section for people speaking english fluently. Most of the people in this section including me applied to UK universities (others to US, Canadian, French or simply Swiss unis).

Exeter was among the most popular choices, maybe the most popular (it was my 2nd choice) and now about 5 close friends of mine are over there. Why was it so popular? Mmm...Probably because it was seen as a uni with a good reputation (overall and for the specific subjects) while still creating a relaxed atmosphere, at least according to the pictures on the prospectus with the green space etc! But I must say, my friends seem to be having the time of their lives overthere. This clearly is an example of how well regarded Exeter is.

that is interesting. exeter, especially at postgrad level, has plenty of international students. i think the university makes a big effort to market itself abroad judging by similar discussions with my postgrad peers. most universities - especially those seen as being more traditional - have lots of international students and it always interests me how people decide between 100 british universities. i think its a good time to be at exeter given the mass investment and large changes made by the vice chancellor. i know exeter came top of the poll for the recent international student satisfaction surveys and is usually around the top 10 for the undergrad satisfaction surveys which im sure the prospectus boasts about. im sure being very green helps too

From what I've read here it seems to me this university is quite similar as Lancaster, the university I currently attend. We have plenty of Oxbridge rejects and many from private and grammar schools. There seems to be a lot of international students too, plenty of Chinese taking advantage of the excellent business and management school there.
