Visiting Bristol uni - what to do, where to see?

Hi guys! I’ve just got into Bristol (wahoo!) but I’ve never actually been to that part of England before! My parents and I want to come down and check it out before I make any big decisions, but we’re coming from Preston so it won’t be possible for us to do the trip in a day. So my Q is, does anyone know anywhere good to stay, go for dinner, visit etc? We’re going to make a trip out of it. Any tips would be great, thanks
Hi - congrats! Bristol is a wicked city I'm sure you'll really love it here  If your parents are into landmarks and stuff you should check out brunels SS on the harbour - its really cool  plus loads of nice places to eat around there. i live nearby so dont know about hotels and stuff but im sure you can find a travelodge

Hi NatterJack16, congrats in getting into the best uni ever lol! My parents came and stayed the night when I moved into halls and stayed in the Ibis in the town centre which was perfectly fine and quite good value, so I reckon go there! A mate of mine was just telling me about this deal you can get on the laterooms facebook though where if you book through them you get a £10 amazon voucher so that’s probably worth checking out if you’re looking to make some return on your visit J Also definitely go for food at Al Bacio if your parents are paying, it’s lush!

Hey when're you visiting/how long for? I have loads of suggestions but it depends on the days/times!

I mean in terms of the uni defo have a look around the Clifton area and Stoke Bishop halls. Maybe try and book a tour with one of the resident tutors if you can.

You could try one of the sightseeing buses as well. Have a good time, Bristol is an amazing city

Staying is probably easiest just out of town (My parents I believe use premier inn Filton last time). However if you're not coming by car and don't want to use it in the day (parking is expensive!), then closer to clifton is best.

Visiting ideas:

SS Brunel
Suspension bridge
Harbourside
Cabot tower
Wills memorial building (part of university and do tower tours)
---
Aquarium
@ bristol (science museum, kiddy, but fun)
Further afield - Longleat safari, Cheddar gorge

You can probably do it in a day, things like the aquarium etc. and further stuff I find are better when you're at Bristol and have visitors down. The top ones aren't so long and give a good idea of the city :-)

Eating there is a huuge variety. All else fails hit clifton (whiteladies road) and walk up/down for lots of options.
I'd recommend (in rough descending order of £££):
Wilks; Casamia; Pony & trap [michelin]
Loch Fyne
Cowshed
Glassboat
River Cottage
The Townhouse
Masa, Noa
And various more casual chains like Wagamama, Las Iguanas, Cosmo, tons of great indians and pubs.

Hi, for all the Bristol students joining this September 2015 or already a student, there is a new fb group which has all the latest information on events, jobs, Bristol Student's union and societies and what's on in Bristol for those that are new to Bristol.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/BristolUniversityStudentsOfficial/
see you soon
You Tube videos that give you some ideas of the important bits :

As you can see, the Harbour area is the hub for entertainment, restaurants etc. But make sure you also drive/walk through Clifton Village, walk over the Suspension Bridge, look at the Theatre Royal and maybe visit SS Great Britain, the M Shed (museum) and maybe do a ferry/harbour tour - http://visitbristol.co.uk/
