CS at top unis

Hi there,

I'm in Year 12 and wanting to do a degree in Comp Sci in unis such as Imperial in London, besides the academic side of offers what extracurricular things would do me well and help boost my application to these unis, atm I am doing the CCNA Cisco Course ( yes I find networking interesting =P ) outside of school as well as applying for various summer schools in 2007.

Would a job of any sort help me? e.g. part time work in a bank, I can find a job which is unrelated to CS but a job related to my interest in computing would probably be difficult to find at this age.

Previously I wanted to do medicine for which it's pretty well known what extra curricular needs to be done in order to get an offer e.g. voluntary work. But to be honest, I dont know much about what needs to be done for CS at a top uni.

Anyway as you can see I'm a bit confused & need some solid advice from you people! Thanks for your help!

I think it helps to elaborate on other interests within the computing field, but you certainly don't need to find yourself a job prior to attending university to prove yourself.

Show some enthusiasm for the course and university and you should be fine (grade depending). Medicine is a great subject to take, but a little competitive, so you may find yourself a bit stuck unless you have Biology / Maths / (Chemistry|Physics) at A-level (most all at A grade (AAB least)).

You won't really need to demonstrate your interest in Computer Science through the means of a job. You could do this like you already have been by taking some computer classes in specialist areas, but again this doesn't seem to be neccessary. I would just emphasise your reasons for doing the course and like washie said, grade depending, you should be fine  Good Luck!
