    Hi,
i've applied to study at Hull but I've read a lot that it's not nice there. What is so bad about it?

Hull has high crime rates, and high unemployment.

Re: The Worst City/Town in the UK?
There's a lot of drivel being talked on this thread, frankly.

As per usual, Hull comes in for a load of ill-informed criticism by people who don't know the place, sometimes haven't even visited it, and judge it by its reputation.

Hull's a great place, and most people who've lived there or studied there will tell you so.

Okay, so the centre of it is not pretty (blame the Luftwaffe!), but many parts of it are very attractive. It's a big, sprawling place, and inevitably it has its less nice bits (I'm thinking Marfleet and Gypsyville...), but it also has places like The Avenues. Living costs are very low - I used to rent a whole flat in a nice area for £200 a month - and getting about is easy. Now that the train services to London and elsewhere are better, it doesn't feel as isolated as it did either.

It's a good place to live too: there's plenty going on, the nightlife is excellent (better than most cities of its size) and the pubs are second to none. Go and have a few drinks around the Old Town and Beverley Road and then tell me Hull's crap...! Hull can be a bit rough in some places, but no more so than any other city and I never felt unsafe there. I also found it a very friendly place, although it is fair to say it can be a little insular. The schools aren't great, but the university is excellent.

I moved to London eight months ago. 'You must be really pleased to be here rather than Hull,' someone said to me the other week. She was horrified when I said 'certainly not,' but I meant it. I would move back to Hull tomorrow if I could: it's laid-back, friendly, cheap, endearing and safe. London, an overpriced, overrated and overcrowded dump, is none of those things.

I think the North West in general* is bad. Bolton, where as known to some of chav city, lol.
    Blackburn is bad

    * lot of nice places in NW too

Ok sod it.. 80% of U.K is horrible. The other 20%:

    10% = countryside
10% = villages, little towns, nice towns, nice city

I can name some nice places.

Clitheroe is a beautiful little town
Bristol is a nice city, great place in my opinion.
Dunstop Bridge, a nice little village in the middle of nowhere, beautiful scenery and 100% **** free.
The Lake District is also a very nice place.
Loads of places in Scotland and Wales too

I am here to defend Nottingham! It is always listed as one of the roughest places to live in the UK but I have been there loads and it is amazing. The shops are great and there is no sign of inner city shootings like it is displayed in the press. Rock on Nottingham!!!

South End. No - Harlow New Town. At least in South End you can have a laugh on the beachfront.

I was anticipating Ch4-ness; I know this is about the worst town, but... I'd just like to say that I love Hackney

Ooh most seem to dislike Luton... There was actually a seminar in my school about studying in the UK and a representative of Luton uni was there and said such good things about Luton (for example it being the 12th best uni in the UK :p:). I was quite surprised back then because I had never heard of Luton before, then looked it up on internet and realized what's really going on...
Hmmph.. a lot of estonians seem to be going there though

Agreed. I can't single out a 'worst city' but there are plenty I'd rather avoid.

Most of Surrey and the IOW suits me just fine. :p:

Goole. Now that really is a dump. I used to say it had two advantages: The Macintosh Arms, and the fact that my best mate lived there. He lives in Hull now and the Mac's no better than many pubs there, so as far as I'm concerned it's a case of 'Come friendly bombs and fall on Goole...'

As for Hull, well, you couldn't be more wrong in my experience...

Yeah luton it is, its gotta be.

Theres no redeeming features about it. (im aware my location says Nottingham but im by no means from there) I used to live in Hemel Hempstead (which i may add is also crap) but yeah luton, I almost moved there when I was about 13 and the only reason why we didnt was that because my mum said she would leave my dad and my brother was going to move out. Just because we were moving to this place! Sounds over dramatic, but honestly thats how they felt, me being 13 at the time, didnt really care either way lol, but with hindsight I realise I probably would have hated it.

Oh and now ive moved from Hemel to Middlesbrough (for non term time anyway) also bit of a dive lol.

We have a knack of moving from one crap place to another.

Erm, what's wrong with Hulls nightlife?

Ok, so we don't have Koko or Oceana, but I've found large clubs like them are devoid of atmosphere.
