In the London area, places to look at are Central St Martins, LCC and Kingston. Goldsmiths College also have good design courses.

I wouldn't recommend going to East London. The uni's very poor and the local area is not very nice. Definitely have a look at LCC though and Kingston: www.kingston.ac.uk.

kingston is not bad at all. goldsmiths is a bit dull, good rep but less hands on from what i heard.

Thankyou for your very good help every1. i was going to ask a similar thing.

What do you think of Loughborough (sp?) for Graphic design? Also Bournmouth?

I've applied for Graphic Design at:

- Arts Institute at Bournemouth
- Bedfordshire
- De Montfort
- Lincoln
- Nottingham Trent
- Portsmouth

Nottingham Trent and De Montfort are my top two, just through what I've heard. Are any of these particularly bad choices comapred to the others in my list?

I wanted to get out of London. I went to LCC for my National Diploma, the facilities there are great (photo studios, darkrooms, computer suites, huge printing room in the basement), and they're very much hands on. I believe in the Degree/FDA you don't even get to work on computers until you realise what you're gonna do and have planned it by hand first. So I'd recommend that. The only reason I'm not going there is because I wanna experience a new place.

so now i need 2 think about where 2 study graphics - i live in bristol and would like not 2 move 2 far away but any recommendations? so far im interested in Brighton, Bournemouth and UCCA

I really want to go to Brighton to do painting. It just felt like a proper arty place with a real buzz. Ages ago I went to Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge, and that was awful (I know its not a uni known for art subjects). I just went to have a look. It was more like a hospital ward than an art block.
The UCCA is mean't to be good. So I have also put that on my application too.

I'm glad it's not just me with that opinion about Goldsmiths. I also just have this stereotype of them being slave drivers about the work too.

today i choose my specialism for foundation and my tutor and i picked graphic design! (i wanted to do that - but my work i felt was more fine arty)

i want a graphic design course which doesnt just work on comps - i prefer a hands on approach!

I'm more of a fine artist too but Brighton are looking for graphic artists, not fine artists who also really like graphic art. I was suprised to learn that it was either one or the other. They're really harsh if your portfolio is more fine art-ish.

Brighton isn't that great for graphic design as they really hold the reins so there it's hard to really push forward abstract ideas. Salford and Leeds Met are the best.

Brighton is VERY hard to get into and they hardly look at your work in the interview, they question you more politically and class-wise.

Even though it is a fantastic city and very vibrant, trying to get in there to study is infinately difficult. They have 36 spaces on the course and 800+ applicants so choose wisely because even people who have industry experience and qualifications coming out the wazoo are not getting in (unless they're the right class or if they've studied in Brighton or London)

Best of luck,
BB

I agree with you when you say "Brighton is VERY hard to get into and they hardly look at your work in the interview, they question you more politically and class-wise." But the first paragraph is incorrect as Brighton is a very experimental university and is quite notable for graphic design.

I recieved an unconditional to Brighton and am very pleased with the university, past students work and placement. I just attended an interview today for Central Saint Martins and am expecting a place so can people give me an opinion on which they would prefer

CSM OR BRIGHTON??????!?!??!?!?!?!?
I'll add the ones no one else has: Bournemouth and Chelsea.
Chelsea is quite traditional graphics so if you want to do illustration don't apply because they won't let you.
But Bournemouth is quite flexible however, you may prefer to apply to their illustration course as they let you use whatever media you choose.

I heard great things about st martins and then saw the prospectus with student work in, it was dreadful. Heard a lot of people say it rests on it's reputation.

It's weird how I'm inclined to agree even though I've applied there. But not for the reputation but simply because the course tutor seemed really nice and I will get the chance to blend graphics with illustration. However, Aiko might know more since she attended CSM.

Don't you get a horrifficly low amount of studio time per week aswell? Wouldn't be too happy with that.

You seem to exaggerate but yeah its not as much as other places. but i think its worth it for the rep. depends on what matters most to you. - the work ain't tiptop but the rep survives.
