Choosing a college at Cambridge

I heard that choosing the right college is crucial at Cambridge. I was thinking of studying law - which colleges would you suggest?
Which colleges are less competitive than others?
Do any colleges prefer state school educated students more than private school students?

Choosing the right college is really not crucial, most differences are small. Your choice of college doesn't affect your chances of getting into Cambridge in general, though there may be differences in your chance of getting into a specific college.
