It's just something to do for enjoyment to be honest so I don't think there's much point in practising unless it's for the further rounds like the kangaroo or the papers with long written questions that I can't remember the names of. And even then, it doesn't really matter. They're not like exams or anything. They're just something for you to have fun with if you like maths and something to mess around with or sleep through (like my friend did) if you're forced to take it and don't.
You could have a look on the UKMT website for old papers if you really want to though.
How easy it is to get gold depends on the person. If you're good at maths and you like (and are good at) puzzles and logic then it shouldn't be difficult. I think it's the top 5 or 10% that get given a gold certificate. Or something like that.
