Also, there is the explanation of like through association. We're more likely to form relationships with people who we meet on a happy positive vibe. So, this could just be a result of the so called "less attractive" person just being funny, kind and supportive.

Women and men choose partners differently.

With women they don't look at 4 guys and rank them 1, 2, 3, 4. What they do is they simply have a minimum threshold (thin, no deformities or widespread acne ect.., okay face) which all 4 men could get over potentially. From there women then assess you both in terms of personality (confidence, funny) and also as a provider (educated, working) before making their decision.

Men are much more about looks with a bit of personality.

Because there is more to a relationship than just physical attraction. If you don't have the same interests but the guy is good-looking, you'll eventually get over the fantasy. I've noticed that I've liked guys whilst gradually getting to know them, that makes them attractive to me.
