Any non-drinkers going to Solent in 2015?

When I went for my interview last year, one thing I did get a lot of information on from the local applicants was the clubbing, and just a few minutes from where I had my interview there was a club (I don't remember the name, but there was an angel/demon theme from what I remember) so I'm guessing that clubbing is the thing to do while at Solent.

I personally don't drink, and clubbing really isn't my thing, so I was just wondering if there's much for non-drinkers to do in a social setting, or if there are any other non-drinkers that would have ideas of things to do on your downtime.

Clubbing is "the thing" at pretty much all universities to be honest.

But I'm sure you'll find people who don't enjoy that scene as much as others, as I know plenty at Solent.

People will rarely go out every night as well, so there'll be plenty of time to spend socialising in your flat if you're in halls.

But to be honest, and you're like me with not enjoying clubbing that much, it's a good thing to go along with especially during the first couple of weeks when it's freshers. If you're in halls it's a great time to get to know your new flatmates and going out at night is mainly what most people will be doing during freshers, so even if you won't enjoy it I can recommend it to help build those relationships.

Once the initial "OMG we're at uni let's get smashed" wears off after freshers you'll find people start being more relaxed having movie nights, or playing football in the park, going to town etc and you can find sports teams and plenty of societies to join to meet other people with similar interests as you.

Overall do not worry about not drinking or enjoying clubbing. It may mean you have to do a bit more at the start, but by no means excludes you from anything.

I am a non drinker going to Solent.
Hi!
I am a non-drinker going to Solent this year, and I have the same concerns. I'm not into the clubbing scene, and I really hate the taste of alcohol! Of course I still want to enjoy my time at Uni, but I would prefer to just have a movie night and just spend time with friends  What do you like to do in your free time?

I'm really not looking forward to Freshers week, at all! I am probably going to go out on a few nights just to (hopefully) make some friends, but I know for sure that I'm not going to enjoy it one bit. I'm not a huge fan of crowded places; they make me nervous!

Maybe we could meet during Freshers week and tackle it together? haha!

I'm with you on the not liking crowded places thing. Although I'm probably going to go along on a few nights too, if only to meet new people and get the layout of the city better. I only got to look around for about an hour when I was there before I had to fly back home, so I'll probably be spending most of Freshers week building a mental map.

Movie nights are definitely something that I'm about, and other than that I really just enjoy reading and listening to music. I'm pretty much the furthest thing from a social butterfly, so university life is definitely going to be a new experience.

And sure, maybe!

I am a non drinker too, and in my downtime I'm going to try and get involved in loads of societies, or get involved with Church activities etc.. I'll also have my xbox with me for when I get bored
I'm going to Solent, and I don't really drink either like you guys. I was hoping to go out on freshers and still enjoy it- just without the alcohol lol. Movie nights and stuff sound much more my kinda thing though!! what societies are you all interested in?
I'm not so much a non-drinker because I occasionally enjoy a few drinks but I'm definitely not into clubbing so feeling the pressure of freshers (definitely not down for that)

Does anyone know of any society clubs that involve film/TV? That's more of my kinda thing:biggrin:

Hi Tiff!

Here is the link to the Solent Uni Societies page: http://www.solentsu.co.uk/get-involved/societies/find-a-society/

There are Film, TV, Radio and Magazine societies to join, among others  When I went there for my interview, my course leader told me that you can sign up for a programme where outside companies contact the Uni for jobs/work and then choose students to complete the work. It would look great on our CV's, so I'm definitely going to do that! Are you thinking of joining any other societies?

Hi there!

Thanks for the heads up! I think the Sonar film/magazine sounds like my cup of tea! Though I'm surprised there aren't any more sports societies such as netball. I'll also be joining the LGBT+ society as a branch of making new friends. Which will you be joining?

Awesome! I'm hoping to join Sonar TV and the magazine, too! I'm also going to join the LGBT+ Society! I can't wait to meet like-minded people  I also want to join either volleyball/Winter Sports society! And the Glee club too, haha!

Aw that's so cool, good to know I'm not alone haha! Volleyball sounds like fun, too:cool: Too bad there aren't any TV-specifics, such as Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead (I've seen a few at other universities!) That sounds like a great way to socialise, though
Haha, yeah! You can always start up your own society! (that could be TV specific) all you need is a certain amount of members (not sure how many) and you could start it up!
