Bringing in solvents other than water would require you to be clear on the solubilities of other substances.

For example, if you use calcium hydroxide solution, you would be getting precipitates of CaSO4 and Zn(OH)2.

I'm guessing zinc sulphate would dissolve in aqueous acid solutions since the solvent in those acid solutions is still water.

In a solution like sodium hydroxide, zinc sulphate would dissolve in the solution since water is a solvent, but zinc ions would combine with hydroxide ions, and form a white precipitate of zinc hydroxide.
