Anyone from Ireland - North/South moving to Liverpool Sept 2015? PGCE/PGDE?

I'm moving Sept 15' to complete my PGDE in Primary with PE Specialism (teacher training course basically) at Liverpool John Moores Uni (LJMU).

Anyone any ideas on what they'll be doing for accommodation?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
are you looking for somewhere to stay that isn't student halls?
Hi Jellybean,

I'm a mature student currently studying at LJMU. Have you had a chance to look at the accommodation John Moores offers to post grads?

https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/discover/your-student-experience/accommodation/postgraduate-and-mature-students

If you need any more info let me know!

Kerri

I will be moving over in Sept to do the primary with maths specialism course  I'm thinking halls will be the best option for me as I dont know anyone else going over.

Kerri...is there many mature students in halls? What halls are you in?

Thanks
Oh that's great news, we should be on the same course then only the specialism area being different! Where abouts are u from?

Halls is quite expensive £143 per week, I'm thinking of looking for a shared house as it'd be much cheaper but haven't really looked into it yet

I can't decide what to do and I really need to make my mind up soon! I just won't Dana be put in halls with first years because I'm going to be 8 years older than them lol
Hi Sean, sorry I've only just seen this. I'm not in halls, I live with my bf in a flat in an area popular with students (Aigburth).

I actually don't know any mature students in Halls personally, the other mature students on my course are older than me and have kids/are married.

Accommodation dept told me that it varies across Halls but students aged over 23 probably make up less than 5% of total new students placed in Halls each year (and most of those are post grads).

If you want, the LJMU accommodation team will place you with other mature students/post grads in Halls. The best places for that this year are: North Western Hall, Liberty Atlantic Point and Liberty Prospect Point (this is good as these aren't exclusively Halls for mature students, so you could potentially dip in and out of the action).

If I was single, I would have chosen a student house share in either Aigburth or Wavertree (most popular areas for student house shares). Not that there's anything wrong with Halls just it would have been more practical for me and I know Liverpool well.

Maybe Halls would be best for you for the first year whilst you get your bearings/make friends. Then maybe you can plan a house share for the next year with the people you've met.

LJMU also organise coffee meet ups for mature students if that's something you might be interested in.

Hope this info helps, let me know what you decide to do!

Kerri

Hi ! Im moving over from derry to do my PGCE at edge hill and i will be living in North western hall! My friend is doing PGCE this year and thats where she has lived and says it is great !
Hey Laurajanephil

Good to hear you have got into a pgce too  Are these halls apart of a university or just halls for students in general from any uni? Are they expensive to live in? I've looked at ljmu halls and they are £143 a week.

Hope to hear back from you

They are for any university and right beside limestreet station. £80 a week and all the 5th floor is for postgrad because I really couldn't cope with being with undergraduate ! Ha ! Thanks really excited to start !
That's pretty good then does that include all bills, wifi etc? Yes me too although it'll be a hard and busy year ahead.

Im moving over from Co.Antrim. I'm doing my PGCE at Edge Hill and haven't looked near accommodation yet. I'm waiting to do my English QTS before getting a head of myself. Halls are expensive but at least they are usually in a good location and have all bills included.

What's North Western Hall like?
Are they funny about people staying over? I would probably have family coming over throughout the year and wouldn't want them staying in a hotel if I could avoid it. I remember Queen's used to let you have like 7 'sleepovers' a year and you had to sign them in before 10:30... what a complete nuisance.

Looking forward having some craic and getting started!
Hey,

There's a PDF handbook for North Western Halls on the sanctuary student website: https://www.sanctuary-students.com/north-western-halls/.

It covers visitors on page 10. Pretty much says that guests should be signed in, accompanied by you in the building and if anyone is staying over more than 2 nights you need to get the property manager's permission.

Hope that helps,

Kerri

Myself and another girl from NI are going to try and look for a house as it will be much more spacious, homily and as you say more convenient when visitors come.

When is your QTS exam? You will be fine, I done mine back in dec and found the test on the day much easier to the practice ones.

If you are interested in a house share let me know sure, we will be looking for houses that are all bill inclusive per week
