Stuck on firm- Durham vs Manchester

I'm really stuck on which uni to choose as I my firm for physics. I liked Manchester's department and international presence (does well on international rankings) but also Durham's close-knit community. I've read through the forums and some threads (like the one a few pages back) suggest that Manchester's reputation isn't that good with 'average calibre' students which is putting me off. Any advice would be great!

If you are interested in a research or academic career, choose Manchester since their physics research is good. If not, Durham because it does have a better reputation.

In the workplace, there is probably not much to differentiate two candidates with good degrees from Manchester or Durham. So for me it boils down to where you want to live. Large vibrant city or quaint historical university town?

And you need to get over your high horse on average calibre people. They form the majority of people on the earth! :-)
