Durham Queens question

Hi, I'm going to Uni in September and had some questions about queens campus...
-What's the night-life like (I am from Manchester and like to go out)
-If I were to join some societies, would I have to get the bus to Durham city
-Can it feel really small and boring to live there for 3 years
-I've heard some of the lecturers are awful, thoughts?
Any responses will be much appreciated as I have to decide between here and Newcastle by next week!!!

I'm in a similar position (stuck between two Unis, the other one is Kent which has a much bigger campus), and a bit worried about the size of the campus and what it means for student life.
When I visited Queens Campus a few weeks ago I also spent a day in Stockton and it doesn't seem like a great town for students. However I was told by one of the University ambassadors that most students just get a cab or the bus to other, more student friendly, towns.

Also, what course did you apply for?

I know, it's really hard to decide! And I applied for business and management, how about you?
Does the uni offer a free shuttle bus into Durham?
I applied for Marketing.
Not sure if the bus to the city campus is free, but I heard that the journey takes 45 to 60 minutes, so not many people go there regularly.

I do think that it's free but I thought the same that no one would go up to the city and that's why I was wondering about societies being based up in the city because I don't want to travel up there everytime I want to take part in a club
Hopefully someone else here can point us in the right direction. All I know is that in the Queen's Campus prospectus it says that there is a range of societies and that you can set up your own ones.

Hi!

Im going to Queens Campus in October too! I won't be living their though, however Middlesborough and Yarm are the main places to go for nights out..! There's Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturday student nights in Yarm in 'The Keys' nightclub! its brilliant in there!
And as for middlesbrough theres nearly a student night every night!!! Theres a large retail park near by (you could probably walk) with loads of restaurants and shops (frankie and bennies, chiquitos, kfc mcdonalds ect...!)
Then theres Middlesbrough high street which is pretty good too!!

:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
Thanks Ashley. Would you say that Stockton should be avoided completely then?

nooo definitely not its a really good place for socialising / drinking well everything really! I would say just as good as Durham town centre! Only difference is you might need to get a 5 minute bus / taxi into Middlesbrough town centre! 😀😀😀
You're welcome! X

I’m a first year student at Queens so I might be able to help you out.
1. When it comes to nights out there’s the Tuesday student night in the Stockton club. On Friday or Saturday night people get the bus up to Durham to the college bars before going out.
2. For societies most people stick to those held at Queens Campus as an hour bus journey to Durham takes up a lot of time but there are plenty to keep you busy at Queens.
3. I’m from a city so I do tend to find Stockton a little on the small side but you get used to it.
4. For lectures I guess it depends on the course you’re taking but mine are fine.

Hope this helps.

No there always seems to be a lot of people around due to the numbers of students here. It’s more just small in size but it can be an advantage if you don’t have a car up here as most places are in walking distance.
For societies it depends on which college you’re allocated but they tend to match up. You have the traditional sports like rugby, football, hockey, netball, and lacrosse. There’s also rowing, cheerleading, singing, art, musical theatre, dance etc. as well as some course related societies so I’m sure you’d find something to try.

The bus connecting Durham and Stockton is free as long as you get your campus card:smile:

Isnt Marketing at Ushaw a college now?
hey, I'm hoping to apply for business management at Durham next year! I was just wondering what gcse grades you have and what AS levels?
As and Bs at GCSE, then AAB in French, German and Media AS.
And Marketing is at Queen's Campus, at least that's what my offer says.

Ohh that's amazing! Well done! What other unis did you get offers from?
Thanks
My other offers are from Kent, Bournemouth and Aston. I think the typical offer from Durham Business School is AAB. What subjects are you doing atm?
