Official Edexcel GCSE Mathematics 1MAO/1H (Non-Calculator) Exam Discussion Thread

Date: 4th June 2015

Time: AM - Most likely 8:30 AM

Duration: 1h 45m

Hello and welcome to the GCSE Mathematics 1MAO/1H (Non-Calculator) Exam Discussion Thread (Official). On this thread, you can discuss any questions regarding the upcoming exam and predictions on what questions can come up etc, even though it's nearly impossible to predict the paper. It'd be great if anyone posts revision sources that they use to revise.

Here are some that I've found:

http://studymaths.co.uk/
https://www.mathswatchvle.com/
http://www.examsolutions.net/
http://www.mathsmadeeasy.co.uk/ - Questions

Most of the difficult formulaes are given to you at the front of the paper. I've attached the formulae sheet in this thread. However, it'd be great to remember them if you are looking forward to A-Level Maths as it requires you to already know the quadratic formula by heart, and many more.

Some formulaes you need to know during the exam:

Surface area of a cylinder = 2πrh+2πr²
Area of a sector = theta / 360 * πr²
Length of an arc = theta / 360 * 2πr
Area of a segment = Area of sector - Area of triangle = (theta / 360 * πr²) - (1/2 * b * h)
Density, Mass and Volume of any shape
Volume of 3-Dimensional Shapes (Cube, Cuboid, Cylinder and Prism)
Cube = Length * Length * Length or (Length)3(Length)^3
Cuboid = Length * Breadth * Height
Cylinder = Area of circle * height = πr²h
Prism = Area of cross-section * length

I've seen that no one is actually replying to this thread. I guess it's going to be an 'active' thread later on when the day of the exam comes nearer. I'm hoping everyone has started revising and hasn't been like me - lazy. I've decided to start revising during the half-term from Friday next week for at least 3 hours a day for that 1 week. I am aiming to finish the syllabus in the entire week. However, I've pretty much covered everything before but it's just because I naturally learn fast which is my advantage - but it doesn't mean I don't have to revise. I'm getting around 80% - 90% average in every paper.

How is everyone getting on with their revision and what methods are they using to revise?
Please share everything so everyone knows what stage you are at, what you are revising. It can strike them in the head that it is finally time to revise or they'll not get that A*.
On the other hand, what are the topics you must struggle on?

Thanks a lot TeeEm, much appreciated! I'm going to be using those papers just for revision as anything helps, and I'm sure others will do the same!

I'm not looking forward to exam , I have done plenty of past paper practice but can't seem to apply that knowledge to new papers. But what are the 4 mark questions which are bound to come up?

Thanks a lot Khushnoodles. Yes, I was meant to post the solutions to the answer at the same time. However, it was very difficult doing it on paint as my pen tool just didn't work the way I wanted it to work. I just posted the solutions onto paper, I've done this to develop people's understanding and enlighten them on how to answer these type of questions.

Hello, I can understand your feelings about this exam as I have pretty much the same anxiety during Biology tests. However, you need to do past paper practice and work on the questions you've got wrong. Either, revise the topic and do those questions again that you got wrong and see if you get them right the next time. Even if you got half the paper wrong, do it again after revising to see if you've actually understood the topic after revision. It's a key way of getting at least an A. You need to understand how to apply your knowledge to all questions, papers and even challenges which is significant. This is because questions in GCSE are worded in a different format compared to the questions you see in textbooks. You need to apply your knowledge and possibly need to use 2-3 formulaes for a certain question such as Pythagoras Theorem and Trigonometry in a question. We cannot predict the questions in a paper as it is totally random. All I can do for you is help you on the topics and questions you struggle on.

Thanks a lot for your help on posting websites that can help people study Maths. It is very considerate of you and I appreciate it a lot. I will add this onto my list on my first post, thanks!

Just remember when you are looking at solutions - open them and the mark scheme as I can already spot an error in June 2014 - Non Calculator - Maths Genie Solutions as the answer to Q4 is meant to be £25.60 but on the model solutions paper it says £23.60. I remember this as I just done the paper yestarday :smile:!
I have 14 exams after half term ;so much revision to do at half term.

I have put a lot of effort into this thread. It takes me around an hour just to put up the solutions and the images on this page not including the time it takes me to do the question as that is not very long. There are constantly errors with me uploading the image onto the page as it doesn't let me view it by saying the attachment is invalid and constantly I have to use alternative methods. However, this is just do benefit everyone and it gives myself practice and actually makes me do something constructive and doesn't let me waste my time... it actually helps my day become productive otherwise it's just me watching cricket all day.

Your notes are amazing , thank you for putting them up.

No problem :smile:. It's good as I enjoy doing it too :biggrin:. I'll continue posting questions and solutions that will help us prepare for topics that we struggle on. I will only post 1 question per topic as every question for the topic will have the same formula or you can use a different formula, but the one I will use will give the correct answer. Therefore, there is no point posting 9 questions on simultaneous quadratic equations and solving them as they'll all use the same formula, 1 is enough :P to help someone learn. If someone is not understanding something, they can private message me anytime :smile:.
