Hi guys!

I am really confused right now as I am currently doing a foundation for Biochemistry (Or Pharmaceutical Chemistry) in Queen Mary University, but am really troubled of my choices. I dont know what to do anymore, since my original plan was to do Bsc in QMUL and then apply for Medicine, however, my parents are kind of pushing me to do medicine earlier, hence telling me to do it in Poland. QMUL is a great worldwide ranked uni, and compared to Poland, I honestly dont know.:smile:

Should I continue to do a Bsc in Biochemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry or should I go do medicine in Poland.

Thank you for you help

Rankings don't matter for medicine, go for the option that is the best for you (so what you want). If you can get a place in Poland and be okay financially I'd take that. Medicine is already a long degree afterall.

Just go for medicine in Poland. If you go to QMUL theres no guarantee you'll become a physician, since GEM is getting hard. However, if you feel academically strong and you can still consider QMUL.

Medicine is Medicine and even biochem at Oxford won't make you a doctor when you graduate.

I come from Poland and I would adivce you to stay away as far as possible from medicine here. The worst med school in UK is still many times better than the best med school in Poland . But just do what YOU wanna do. Don't let your parents decide for you, it's your life and not theirs.

Someone in my year did Medicine in Poland for three semesters before getting in here (FYI: not the UK but another western European country) and was very happy with the med school she was at there and what she was getting for her money. She said she would have been more than happy to make the decision to stay there to finish her degree had she not got in this time around. I don't know which med school it was though, though I think she might have been studying in Warsaw.

Med schools are free in Poland . She might have attended private med school then and I am talking about public ones. Difference of opinion I guess, my friend attends Medical School of Warsaw and is not happy with it at all and is planning on transfering to UK.

medicne in poland isnt free, especially for uk sudents. its only free if your polish and got really high marks in the polish equivalent of a level.
anyway, i would advice you to definetely go to poland. im half polish and lived there (in gdansk) for several years. its a nice coastal city  my sister goes to the medical university of gdansk, and she thinks its very good. it is a medical degree anyway, no matter where its from its great. theres loads of english division students there (swedish, arabs and other europeans:smile: so im sure youd like it.. my dad actuallly got his medical degree from that same uni agess ago (so all the professors know my sis hah) and now hes a consultant in the uk, and can get a job in literally any uk hospital, because of everything he did AFTER graduating (2 specialsions, attending various conferences etc..). my sister is finishing her final year rn and starting her F1 training or whatever you call, it the uk this august. so when u get back from poland you can do your training here. as my dad says, a medical degree is the only one that will guarantee you a job straight away after graduating
sorry, its so long, but anyway i thnk its better to be a doctor, no matter where u get your degree from, rather then do some science degree and waste years trying to get into medicine in the uk. hope i helped at least a bit

No-one goes to the Polish language courses. The English ones are not free.
I agree with the advice on this thread - If you want to become a doctor, go for medicine in poland. There is no guarantee for GEM, and you cant become a doctor studying something else no matter how good the university is

However, consider the fact that english taught courses wont help at clinical stages when you need to interact with patients and other clinical teams. Taking histories and asking for consent to perform a physical exam from a patient when you dont speak the same language as them seems like it would be problematic.

And get some advice from the GMC regarding foundation programme eligibility if you are looking at coming back to the UK. There are some countries in the EU, which upon completion of your medical degree, you will be deemed ineligible for FY1 posts, making it problematic to train in the NHS until more senior grades. I think Poland is one of these countries, but best checked by contacting official sources such as the GMC and the UKFPO elegibility office to be sure.

Currently there are no issues with Individuals that are going from Warsaw back to England for FY1 spots!
Does anybody know anyone studying medicine in Warsaw or Kraków? I would like to know how it is if possible?

I'd beg to differ especially with foreign med schools with poor health care relatively at least...

Do what you wanna do I guess, but I have friends and members of family who decided to go for med in Poland and dropped out soon after because they didn't like it and decided to study in the UK. As far as for the UJ- it's VERY overrated. Besides, med schools in Poland aren't good and if you wanna stay here for residency then I wish you lots and lots of luck because usually you take what they give and you can rarely end up specialising in what you wanna specialise in from the beginning, most often you just go for what is left for you. I wanna do medicine and I sure am not staying here, I'm going for KCL for biomed and them GEM because really there is no point in doing medicine here and becoming a crappy doctor compared to the UK ones. But that's just my opinion.

It can affect the quality of education you receive in foreign med schools true, however, in terms of FPAS applications it wouldn't. I'd rather study in a foreign country than risk GEM since its becoming harder as the years go by...

In addition, as far as I know students who study degrees such as biomedical sciences in the UK, for example at King's, perform around 5 dissections in their first year of study. In comparison, my friend who studies at WUM has performed none up until now and it's already June(she's a med student). The thing with polish schools in general is you get almost zero practice whatsoever, and med schools are no exception so you may be dissapointed. Unless you are fine with said teaching method then I would adivce you against it.

About health care- you are making it look better than it is, actually because the quality of said health care is by far worse than that. Recently our doctors performed a surgery of removing patient's kidney because he had a huge tumor on it and it could have been called a success had they removed the right kidney and not the healthy ono so yeah... And I am not making it up, it was all over the news so you can easily found it. Actually, once you start looking there will be a variety of cases to choose from so don't worry.

But on th bright side it's so much easier to get in.

My cousin studied in Krakow, my other cousin in Warsaw and I have friends at both so feel free to ask any questions. If you really wanna study medicine in Poland then go for WUM in Warsaw because UJ in Krakow is greatly overrated and WUM is better when it comes to practical aspects of the course.

Hi Dappaman, I've just been offered a place a WUM, just wondering how you find the course compared to your undergrad? Do you rent, if so how did you go about it? Is there anything you know now which you wish someone had let you know of before you went to Warsaw?

Sorry to bombard you with questions!
