The correlation coefficient is basically a value between -1 and 1 to represent how strong and the direction of the correlation present. A value close to -1 such as -0.9 is quite a strong NEGATIVE correlation, meaning as one factor increases, the other decreases. A value close to 1 such as 0.9 has a strong POSITIVE correlation, as one factor increases so does the other. 0 means there is no correlation between the factors and a number close to 0 indicates that there is only a minor correlation in said direction. Hope this helps.
