How to test for a double bond? Also, drying agents and purification of products?

How would I test for a double bond? Would I use some sort of chemical and would that involve a color change? If so, whats the color change?

And also:

When preparing a solution on 'n-propyl bromide' by reacting a alcohol with HBr, the product is apparently washed with various solutions and then dried. What would be the drying agent used?

One last thing, in the case mentioned above, what technique would be used to purify the product?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. these are questions at AS-level.

Do you mean a C=C double bond? If so, you use aqueous bromine, and if present, a colour change from orange/brown to colourless will occur. This reaction is called electrophilic addition by the way.

Drying agents: http://orgchem.colorado.edu/hndbksupport/drying/drying.html

I think you can purify the product by simple distillation, as the halogenoalkane will boil off at a lower temperature than the alcohol.

Ok, makes sense

Thanks a lot for the answer.
