I agree with the OP. The trouble is, I've been rejected before and have done lots of research on the company and done all the things suggested, so I agree that other factors are involved too, that you might be unaware of.

Can I also just say that sometimes people are employed having not followed any of the 'rules'. A friend of mine got a job in a high street store just as she turned 16, having done no research on the company and going to the interview in flip flops and a casual outfit she'd wear out shopping. I went for the same job in smart clothes and having found out info about the company, but I got rejected...
