The OFFICIAL Pool Thread
Welcome to the University of Cambridge forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything about Cambridge.

Re: The OFFICIAL Pool ThreadIf there's been an error in the procedure, you have a right to complain. Only the candidate (not the school or parent) can raise a complaint. I would phone them and ask why the Cambridge guidelines for automatic pooling were not followed by the college on this occasion.(Original post by Minthumbug)
"As stated in the College's policy, we are unable to engage in any discussion with candidates who havefailed to recieve an offer... Any such approaches to the College will be directed to the candidates school"
You really have nothing to lose. Even if you re-apply next year, it will be to a different college. -

Re: The OFFICIAL Pool ThreadYeah you're right. I tried to ring just now, but answer phone saying the admins office is closed until the 8th or something like that.(Original post by grumballcake)

It's ridiculous. I'll see if I can find anything out from my school tomorrow. Thanks anyway -

Does that college still have an interest in you? Well it says they can't make me an offer so I'm guessing no
Auto-pooled? Well my grades were nowhere near that good so no
It says they'll phone us between 5-8th, I'm guessing they won't phone during school time would they? Because that would just suck -
Re: The OFFICIAL Pool Threadso we can hear again from them in two days?(Original post by grumballcake)
Errm. It's not really surprising - it's the recommended procedure. College are supposed to pool the bottom 20% of the candidates that they would otherwise have made offers to. Then they fish in the pool to see if there's anyone better. If they don't find anyone better, they have preference until 5pm today to take their own candidates back out of the pool. -
Re: The OFFICIAL Pool ThreadI think you need to act very quickly. Mistakes do happen and on the face of it that looks a possibility here. The pool fishing exercise is today and tomorrow. If you are not in that pool you have little chance of being fished out. Get an e mail across to the college now and explain your concerns politely and clearly. That way you (and they) have a record that they have been made aware of a potential problem. Raise it with your school first thing tomorrow as a matter of urgency. If you get no response by mid morning contact the Cambridge University Admissions Office (Miss Reed) directly explaining the situation. You have nothing to lose by trying.(Original post by Minthumbug)

Does that college still have an interest in you? It says I'm still under consideration but i believe it says that on all magdalene pool replies
Auto-pooled? Got 6A* GCSEs and around 80ish-90 UMS so probs not. quite pleasantly surised considering i preety much froze in one interview -
Re: The OFFICIAL Pool Thread
Does anyone know or have statistics for the numbers of applicatants that specific colleges pool or fish each year? Or have any idea which subjects tend to fare better in the pool?
I know the factsheet has total numbers for 2006, but I was wondering exactly which kind of applicant for which kind of subject benefits the most from being pool and why. I was, for example, thinking women would because of the presence of all-female colleges in Cambridge.
Or maybe I'm just spending too much time thinking about fishing! -
Re: The OFFICIAL Pool Thread
I had 10 A* at GCSE, and I had 1 AS at over 90%, 2 AS at like 89% but a full A-Level at 99% at the time of applying - so I don't know how taht goes towards auto-pooling?!
Subject : Maths
Pooled by : John's
Interest : They don't mention any. I just get the nice pharse "one of two possible outcomes" which are "rejection" or "offer by another college" - so I assume not
Auto-pool : No idea. -

Does that college still have an interest in you? Yes, I'm 'still under consideration' by Queens'.
Auto-pooled? I meet the criteria overall (94% and 7 A*), but my most relevent AS (RS) is under 90%... *shrugs*
Bahhhh, I'm going to jump every time the phone goes!
