Why do so many people defend NHS?

Because poor people are disgusted by the fact that money has to be involved in any aspect of their life other than receiving.

Then there's also the media portrayal that anything "private" is like the U.S., which is dumb as rock. That's what happens when facts are oppressed and people fail to hear of this country called Switzerland which is mostly private but is the best-performing country in Europe based on health, along with Poland who also has lots of private users.

Aside from the debate as to whether it should be free at the point of access (which, of course, it should be), the thing that makes me most proud of the NHS and being British is the influence of immigrants on the system. When my grandmother reached the final stages of her life in a hospital in North-West England, it was hard-working Lithuanian, Polish and Indian nurses and doctors who made her stay as comfortable as possible. They were exceptional.

I'm a libertarian so while I think there should be some sort of bankrolled socialised health organisation to act as a safety net, I think we should copy the Germans; the vast majority of the population should be receiving their healthcare from the private sector mainly through health insurance.

(I expect all funding related to healthcare to be channeled through this organisation). However it can even be an organisation similar to NHS.

Spending more on healthcare is not a negative thing. Germany or France have reputations for producing far better healthcare despite having more liberal funding of healthcare.

*literally anyone from tourists to illegal immigrants to vulnerable citizens who are unable to use private healthcare. Access is open to even citizens with private healthcare plans or a high amount of savings.

Because people still have this idea that some goods and services can be "free".

My experience of the NHS is pretty mixed, I have witnessed/experienced both awful and superb care from them. Personally I think specialist centers do well and more generic services are poor. I don't think the concept is wrong but the NHS could learn allot from the private sector without joining it.
