Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadHeyy, I've got an offer but I haven't got my grades yet, so I can't tell you much, but it is a lovely college and it's on the river and it's in the middle of town. Have you checked out the alternative prospectus? I think zephyrost goes there, so you could try quoting him!(Original post by Audrey...)
Hey, I'm considering applying to Trinity Hall next year. I'm down to three colleges but this one seems particularly friendly and really pretty
I'm looking for some extra persuasion so could someone tell me what it's like living there, basically anything you would've liked to be told when you applied.. Thanks!

Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadAhh you're so lucky, well done! (and good luck!) Yeah the location is definitely a huge advantage, and it also doesn't look as touristy as some of the bigger colleges - and of course it's so pretty!(Original post by E13)

Yep I've read the cusu alternative prospectus if that's what you mean (I think I've read absolutely everything there is on trinity hall haha)

Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadThanks, hopefully shouldn't be too bad, I needed 24% in one exam and 30% in another so if I haven't got those I've screwed up worse than I thought. I think there are quite a lot of tourists in summer, but not as many as King's etc. And yeah, I'm afraid I don't know much else, cept that all first years live in college, the library is open 24-7, and if you're a CompSci, Mathmo, MML or NatSci you start a little early.(Original post by Audrey...)

I'm not actually sure how much there is to say that you probably don't already know. Which subject would you be applying for?
You're right on the tourist front - there are generally very few around, and they're generally not allowed in around the exam period. I've never found myself bothered by them.
Mathmos and Natscis (and I assume compscis) come up a week earlier than everyone else, and MMLers a couple of days after that. -
Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadI don't really have any specific questions as such, I'm just looking for information on the general atmosphere etc. Are there any ugly buildings that they've hidden on the website? Because that tends to happen(Original post by Carolus)

I know the esthetics of the college shouldn't be my first criteria but I guess that's the only one that really works because all the colleges are roughly the same academically aren't they?
I'd be applying for natsci (biological) -
Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadI've applied for maths. Waiting for STEP results...(Original post by Audrey...)

I also have a question about the academic differences: how many supervisors are there (for maths) and what do they do other than the supervisions? (I suppose that depends...) Do they have supervisions with students from other colleges as well?(Original post by Audrey...)

Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadThe people who run your supervisions are actual academics. If you did a small subject, like philosophy you might share an academic with another college, but for maths, it will be an academic who may also be giving lectures but will be doing their own research. Atleast, that's what I think. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I've got muddled!(Original post by DamoclesAustria)

There are no ugly buildings at central site - there's a less wonderful looking building at Wychfield, but that's about it.
Good Luck(Original post by DamoclesAustria)
I've applied for maths. Waiting for STEP results...
There are 3 maths supervisors in college, although only two of them supervise first years. I don't think any of them supervise people from outside college (except maybe in third year, when supervisions are department arrranged instead, rather than in college). Other than being supervisors: one of them is the maths DoS for TH, and the other two have lecture courses.I also have a question about the academic differences: how many supervisors are there (for maths) and what do they do other than the supervisions? Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadSuper Halls are smart casual, althought it's worth noting that they may not continue for much longer/at all.(Original post by DamoclesAustria)
Thanks for your answer, Carolus.
Another question:
What are you supposed to wear on Formal/Super Halls? Smart casual?
Also, when do students have to wear college gowns?
Formal Hall is normally suit/tie and gowns, I think.
There are also Black Tie formals, and some other special meals such as Halfway Hall that are black tie.
You don't need to wear gowns terribly often - You'll need it for the Matriculation photo/dinner in the first week, and then for any formals you choose to go to. Other than that, there aren't very many gown-requiring situations that I can think of. -
Re: The Trinity Hall Thread
Hey, sorry for slow reply, in Nepal teaching at the mo and the wi fi is atrociously unreliable (yay for first world problems in third world countries)
If you haven't already made your decision then it definitely should be tut hall (and the same applies if you have decided on anywhere but tit hall) I picked it for Justin's reason, it was by far the prettiest college I found in Cambridge, yes I know it sounds vain but otherwise they all seem pretty much identical on open days.
I absolutely love it here, you're right about the friendly atmosphere, everyone knows and gets along with everyone and there's a really nice college spirit.
Add to that the great location, fantastic library and the quality of supervisors (I did phys nat sci and had great supervisors including one bio supervisor, perhaps my favourite)
If you have any other questions please let me know, I promise to reply to them but not nessecarily particularly quickly
All the best,

I was wondering, if I've got the odd bit of clothing that needs ironing, do I have to bring my own iron? Obviously I try to avoid it, but some things need it

Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadDid you get an email about the accomodation?(Original post by Catherine.)
Just got my accommodation today...can any students tell me what staircase C is like? Haha. -

Re: The Trinity Hall ThreadC staircase is a particularly nice one, between the central front court and north court where all the bicycles are kept (you'll be facing one or the other) with mostly large rooms, one tiny one don't remember which number though sorry, split between two floors, and with a particularly well placed kitchen. You'll love it(Original post by Catherine.)
